Re: RISC OS; Pros and Cons

Thanks for Ackermann 's because I'd never even heard of it. What puzzles me most about it is why DavidS's raspi significantly outperforms mine when Ackermanning. Are you sneakily underclocking something DavidS? S'bliddy clever! Ackermann's as benchmark reflects stack efficacy? Riscos performs how we...

Re: RiscOS: Installing to hard drive

I didn't know they still Made them DavidS! A 3TB monster of a drive is around £100 and 160gb seems to be £15 to £50 pounds. So, they are not really a bargain. What I'm saving for is an SSD. High hopes! I'm told that even Windows boots quickly from one of those babies. Presently I have a [email protected] at...

At 1.7 seconds.. considerably faster. I wonder why.. is that compiled or interpreted Tim?

Re: RiscOS: Installing to hard drive

Installing RiscOS on old 160gb hard drives is not a very bright idea at all. I know - I tried it. It didn't 'feel' right with tiny glitches and stutters. That might well be the clunky old 160gb MSD which has seen better days but until I can afford an SSD I'll boot from the SD card.

Re: RISC OS; Pros and Cons

Ahh.. curiouser and curiouser! To be honest my experiments with overclocking have been periodically highly negative but if I go at stock speed she's rock steady under RiscOS or Raspbian. It also doesn't help that I'm writing and debugging whilst RiscOS is running.. more bugs than code really. As to ...

Re: RISC OS; Pros and Cons

Yeah, pygmy_giant! Something is better than nothing 8) polas, yes - my benchmark is certainly a trivial computing task. In many ways, however, it's more revealing than an overly complicated one. The reason for that is that it deals only with integers, and a minimum of flow-control. Screen updates on...

Re: RISC OS; Pros and Cons

For the same value of output running at stock processor speed Python returned approx 65k revolutions to BBC Basic's 360k. Is this a proper benchmark you ran or just some code knocked together? It would be interesting to compare the run times of BBC Basic code and some other language running under R...

Re: RiscOS: Installing to hard drive

Weeell, I'd assumed that a hard drive might behave somewhat better in terms of OS corruption and collapse than as SD card but I had a hard drive corrupt last night - possibly a result of overclocking. Bad sector size under FAT32 seemed to be the problem. fsck under Linux seems to have rectified it. ...

How are two BASIC's apples and oranges? No, Cox's and Pippins (they are both apples) possibly. The comparison is valid for those considering developing in Python under Raspbian vs BBC Basic under RiscOS.

Speed.. on the pro's.. I estimate that RiscOS interprets high level language 5 times faster than Raspbian both on the pi. Based on what exactly? The processor is the same and I don't see why the operating system should be involved very much with interpreting high level languages. Are you claiming t...

Re: RiscOS: Installing to hard drive

No, you're quite right. RiscOS loads an image from the SD card but everything else can be loaded from hard drive. Apps, modules and the like. It might negate SD card corruption when overclocking.

No worries.. I have found a lot of stuff by dint of looking! but it certainly helps to know how to find something you know must be there. I really liked Raspbian - picked up my hard drives and had no trouble formatting whatsoever or storing and streaming data after booting from them. I found that sh...

Searching for files and directories

Hi,

How do I search for a particular file or directory? Currently what I do is manually look in each location hoping to spot something that wasn't there before I ran the automatic install. Quaint but hardly efficient! Surely there is a better way of which I am ignorant?

Ah... found the little bugger and it's attendant help file. Manual configuration is the order of the day. It wasn't my intention to go scaremongering, but I see how that could be construed. No, what I'm really after is a problem free drive with good longevity. I don't need the fastest thing under the sun but I do need something that's not going to blink out on me along with the day's work. I also dislik...

Re: SSD drive scandal

The scandal , I interpret, is the way in which SSD's are addressed. Theoretically, I think, LBA capable computers should be able to address an SSD's storage without translation - in other words 'raw'. Is that now the case or am I simply wrong?

Re: What does RISCOS bring to the RPi party

What does RiscOS bring to the party? Well, I've only just got here but instantly I can see the fresh perspective and the ethos with which ROS software is written. It's all about footprint/functionality as a measure of power. Where we are conditioned to accept that, say, a firewall can weigh in at 30...
