Re: Brighton Raspberry Pi User Group

Yes Colin, plug it into your HD TV. It's meant to be! I am going to build a laptop thingie using a Motorola LapDock. There's a thread about it somewhere... But I also have a second Pi coming from RS (my current one is a Farnell order), so I can hack about with one safe in the knowledge that I have a...

Ah Lob0426, I see.

Maybe an edge connector? Like a ZX-Spectrum? Oh... maybe not! ;)

Re: What exactly does the Unique Activation Code suggest?

Yes. The whole of RS has come to a standstill while you decide whether to go ahead and buy a Pi. Your personal pi is sitting on a golden cushion guarded by dragons, just waiting for your response. Get on with it. The longer you faff about, the longer you will have to wait for your Pi. After some pr...

Re: I made a Raspberry PI Laptop

@chipmonger: Yes, I believe it acts like a powered hub (powered from the lap dock, not the Pi). I'm thinking of one of those micro wifi adapters would be a perfect addition... if there is one with the right drivers.. @Lob0426 : apart from the comments made in the thread you linked to about twisted p...

Re: futile order cancellation

I would suggest taking the Pi and reselling on eBay if you cannot cancel your order with RS - or offering it for sale here. There's a lot of guys who'd love to buy it from you!

Interesting. Western Digital Passport drive case is nearly a perfect match (but to use it I would have to remove the Ethernet, composite video and USB sockets). Rather a bit more hacking than I'd hoped...

Re: I made a Raspberry PI Laptop

I ordered this lapdock from oyyy yesterday, with the free 5-day postage, and it arrived this morning  I'm really impressed with the quality of it (especially for the price I paid! ;) ), but I can't do anything with it until the adapters/cables/convertors/etc. I ordered from Amazon yesterday ...

Re: I made a Raspberry PI Laptop

How about the trackpad? Does it handle any multitouch gestures (the main one is 2 finger scrolling for me)? I know from experience that trackpad support in Linux is sketchy at best).

Re: I made a Raspberry PI Laptop

A little more information culled from various reviews. It has backlit keys. Reviewer liked the feel of the keys. Screen is shiny, like a MacBook Air. Looks high quality. Lid is metallic. Very large multitouch trackpad. Brightness / Volume controls accessable via FN keys (not sure if it's controlled ...

Re: I made a Raspberry PI Laptop

Can someone who has one of these lapdocs please take a picture of the keyboard (so I can see the yas and their layout) and any i/o ports? Even though I ordered one I cannot see the full technical specs and I was unable to download a manual from Motorola (possibly due to the sluggish network I'm on a...

Re: I made a Raspberry PI Laptop

Just got one from OIYY<whatever>.co.uk. £51, a bargain. Now to snag some cables. I would anticipate that the Pi can be mounted inside it - somehow - but if not, it's not a deal breaker. I wonder how big the phone is? You might consider gutting one to use as a case for the Pi, remove unneeded ports a...

Well, it looks like (from the task manager) I get a whole 3MB of memory back if I have a plain background (and it probably quickens redraws of the background, too). We need a GPU accelerated desktop...

Re: HELP!

Probably best to use gparted (this is the partition manager) to reformat it (it is on one of the Pi Debian menus), or put the caed into a PC running Linux and (again) use gparted.

By the way, if you make your thread title a little more meaningful, you may get more responses.

Re: Recommeded C++ dev environment ?

I'm a professional C++ programmer and I do not use IDEs. The reason for this is that I work for different clients and they don't always have the same tools installed on their Unix boxes. Therefore, I have made sure I am able to use the basics: vi, make, compiler / linkers. The problem with vi is tha...

Save some memory?

Hi

Quick question. I'm using Debian with the 224 image. If I choose a plain background (i.e., not a bitmap) for my desktop, should I expect it to save some memory, or does the image go in the GPU's memory space?

Cheers

Posted from my Pi

Just wanted to say that... I'm logged on to the forum with my Pi. Man, it is slow. But strangely... satisfying. It's a matter of keeping the tiny board in front of you to remind you just what an amazing feat of electroncs it really is.. So, this is a bit of a nonesense post, but at least it is sent ...

Me too... shipped email sent 08:50 today.

Do they use Royal Mail or some other courier? I ask because I won't be there when it arrives, so I'm hoping it won't need a signature. Otherwise I'll have to go to the P.O. or contact the courier.

Re: The eternal question: When are things going to be normal

I think we'll see a load on eBay being sold by people whose expectations haven't been met. Although I don't have one yet (next week say Farnell), I am bracing myself for a dreadfully slow desktop experience and not looking forward to it to be honest. I hope it will be fast enough, and I hope we see ...
