then put a files called ssh on the boot partition
and stuff it in the PI and boot it
then see if you can ssh into it

can you sudo on that machine if so you can change the password with
sudo passwd -u pi
sudo passwd pi

use multiple sources to find the best one you should follow,

if you follow the foundations way i.e. this place here .. then you will stand on a good footing for raspberry stuff,

TBH , you best bet is to download the latest raspbian and burn that to a new micro SDcard
then use that to start with

otherwise you are going from Jessie -> stretch -> buster - thigs will not go as well as you want
