Thanks, Dougie, I got it working but I still wonder why the NOOBS menu selection does not work.

NOOBS keyboard selection not working?

When I select USA language and keyboard on the NOOBS ( Ver. 1.3.2 Nov 2 2013) screen, the selection seems to take effect. But when I type the pipe symbol ( | ), I get a tilde. This happens with two different keyboards and every time I reboot, the default language comes up in English UK and keyboard ...
