Yes, the big raspberry is the LXDE screen. You should have IDLE icons visible. However, you should also be able to find IDLE by clicking on the small LXDE button, which looks like a dove, at the bottom left corner. This should open menues with a whole load of choices.

After logging in at the console, enter the word startx then use the return key. That will start the LXDE desktop. IDLE choices should appear on the desktop.

Thank you. The Raspberry Pi browsers do not allow me access to user profile, but using a Windows PC I found under "Board preferences" an entry "Summer Time/DST is in effect: Yes No". Setting it to "No" I now have the right time when I log on.

The footnote says "All times are UTC [ DST ]" Does this mean DST is always 1 hour ahead of GMT? I understood that DST was over for the winter.

Edit: If I remove all cookies, all times change to GMT

I have to re-size the window to check whether there is text beyond the border.

I'm now good to go using the Pi as a unix computer to put the Raspian OS on another XD card plugged in via a usb card reader.
