Re: Dist-upgrade takes ages and fills SD

For the last part (device becoming full) ... did you expand the file system to make it use the full amount of remaining space on the SD card after copying the original image?

Re: Safe shutdown circuit using a supercap

As an aside ... have you considered an approach that uses no extra hardware or circuitry? If you r display device is connected via HDMI and provides CEC signals then it should tell the RPi that the display is being turned off and then you can catch that and try an orderly shutdown ... assuming there...

Apple adds Raspberry Pi as reference device for Airplay

In one of the Apple WWDC sessions last week (session 701 - about building accessories) Apple speaker said that a new reference platform has been added for those that want to build Airplay-capable devices ... Raspberry Pi running BSD (speaker said NetBSD). Source code is available but requires authen...

Re: Home Automation Project

With WWDC behind us and the announcement of HomeKit, I have been looking at the possibility scrapping SiriProxy support and instead use Apple MFi. Not to make the RPi into a MFI controller, which I have read some threads of limited success on the RPi, but to turn the RPi into a MFi bridge. I think ...

Ah - so you are uising Homeplug (or similar).
Try physically separating things and getting the disk power brick well away from the Homeplug device.
You could temporarily run a long lead from a different power outlet and plug the disk in there.

Re: Can't install MYSQL on Raspbian

I just repeated it on a fresh SD card image - but it was so fresh that a bunch of other tools such as lsof we're not installed. So I used ctrl-c to break out of the apt-get and then ran sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and the dist-upgrade installed a lot of things including updates to ...

another alternative - install "LMS" and SqueezeLite and get thousands of radio stations listed (including BBC On Demand stuff) - with easy control via web browser and free mobile phone app. One way to do it is Squeezeplug (see lots of forum posts about it) - which gives you a menu-based installation...

Re: Rasplex switching pi on and off

In general it is better to have a controlled shutdown rather than simply cutting off the power - particularly if the RPi is making frequent writes. However, some TVs (like my Sony) send a message via CEC to say that the display is going off ... and some implementations on the RPi (like Raspbmc) can ...

One of the easiest routes would be to d...

Re: squeezlite command to change ID?

I think that the name change should have stuck .... however, try running Squeezelite with a "-n" parameter to set the name
Also ... Try
which squeezelite
To see where it is being run from

See https://code.google.com/p/squeezelite/ for more info about command line parameters.

Re: squeezlite command to change ID?

Easy way to do this is from the LMS web interface on port 9000. http://pi-IP-address:9000 or from one of the remote control apps. Note: the name is remembered by LMS via the claimed MAC address of Squeezelite. This is one of the parameters to the Squeezelite command line (possibly conveyed through /...

An alternate route might be to open them up and see if there is a jumper inside for EU/non-EU modes.
Of course, this would be at your own risk.

If you want only output then maybe look at the IQaudIO board - that makes 5 available.
Otherwise you'll have to be more precise in your requirements to get better recommendations.

The Wolfson card makes 2 GPIO pins (plus power) available.
Those pins are usually used for serial comma but I read that they can be readily reassigned.

The sound is fine (sounds the same to me as it was with the Siundblaster USB DAC that I was running before) - but I'm more of a gadget fan than an audiophile.
Real test will be throughout today when we are having a double birthday party and I plan to have it playing music most of the day.
