Re: Packages from debian you want to see in raspbian reposit

Thanks for your thoughts on mariadb, plugwash. I have been working with Postgresql and Sqlite. Psql is a good alternative in most cases. Mysql is used in a large percentage of internet based applications and many people may be used to using it. Who knows the future. Debian will probably provide Mari...

Re: Text based IDE for C

Emacs has a steep learning curve but is essentially a text based development environment for C. I still use vi only because it was the first Unix text editor I learned during a Unic/C class at UNF in the early 90s. You might try jed as an emacs like editor with drop down menus. Emacs btw, is much mo...

Re: Packages from debian you want to see in raspbian reposit

I would like to have the mariaDB package available for Raspbian. It is a MySql fork or clone. Mysql is now owned by Oracle. Oracle is not the best steward of open source software. Many such as NearlyFreeSpeech have begun the transition to MariaDB. I am currently using Mysql for my websites, as many/...

From a post above...

// unless one posts to every one of them just to get e-mail notifications of updates

There is a "Watch" button at the top of each thread page. By keying on that button, you can receive notification even when you don't post.

Re: Raspberry Pi Website (feedback needed)

raspberrypi.org is great!

I will always visit raspberrypi.org daily. However, it has so much content that it can be overwhelming to keep up with. For some a site focused on their particular interest might be nice. That is the nice thing about the internet.

$0.02, YMMV

Re: Gertboard shipping date.

Thank you for the update. By the time my Gert Board arrives, I hope to have a second R Pi to use for physical mecatronics. I am using my original for software development.

Re: Long range radio transmitters?

The best source for very long range radios would be amateur radio. It has become quite easy to obtain an amateur radio license in the US.

If you would like further assistance let me know.

I have a LAMP development system running on my RPi. It was easy to set up. When I get home from work this evening, I'll list the packages you need to apt-get. Everything is available.

Very nice!

I will need another SD card to experiment with. I use it at home on an old via board.

Thank you!

Re: Gertboard Self-assembly / Builders

I would be willing to build a Gert Board for some that cannot. I would like to build one for myself first though. I have one on order and will post again after that. I have many years of experience and have built many pieces of equipment far more complex that a Gert Board. When I complete mine, I'll...

Jumper source

I enjoy prototyping and hobby programing but I don't enjoy making jumpers and cables for development boards. I have been using a company called Schmart Board as a source for cables and bare prototyping boards for a couple of years. They have good quality and service. (I'm just a customer, no interes...

Re: Gertboard is here!

It is not beyond reason for a group of students to build the Gert board. I taught a class called Far Out Science for several years that consisted of secondary school students. One of the most popular projects was building a small AM/FM radio that was about the same complexity and cost of the Gert bo...

Re: OS X Lion - Burning SD Card?

I will give sudo bash a try this evening when I get home from work.

I am also going to try using my R Pi with a card reader to flash the card. I don't have access to a Windoze computer.

Thanks, Jeff

Re: It's finally here!

I just looked at the emailed invoice. It will ship from Farnell in the US. They charged me $20 for shipping. That does seem a little high bringing the price to a few cents short of $81.

I'm still a happy camper!

Re: OS X Lion - Burning SD Card?

The SD card is unlocked, and I utilized sudo just as with the version previous to Lion.

I spent an hour or so and two different SD cards that work and format fine. It will just not perform the dd function. I heard that Lion has been secured at the expense of power users. (?)

OS X Lion - Burning SD Card?

I upgraded my MacBook Pro to OS X Lion. I can no longer flash an image to an SD card. I get the error: operation not allowed.

I used the same method that worked successfully prior to the upgrade.

Anyone else have a similar problem? Solution?

Thanks you, Jeff

Re: It's finally here!

I have one on order with a 29 day lead time. The US price was about $60. Well worth the price when you consider all of the discreet compnents and their costs. The kit saves all of the time to order the individual parts. When compared to similar development boards $60 is a bargan. The whole package i...
