Howto: setting up Pi 2 Ubuntu MATE with Raspbian software

Having experimented considerably with Ubuntu MATE 15.04 on the Raspberry Pi 2, I thought I'd write a guide on setting up this distro and installing some software on it which is available for Raspbian. The following will set up Ubuntu for the Raspberry Pi 2 with excellent performance, and much softwa...

Re: Are there different variations/ revisionsto the RPi 2?

AFAIK the Raspberry Pi Foundation are planning a Raspberry Pi 2 Model A once they can get the price point down to US $20.

Will HW-accelerated Epiphany / Web be updated to work on Raspbian Jessie? (This may also make it work on Ubuntu 15.04 on the Pi 2.)

Any chance you could add PiCon to the Raspbian repos?

Re: Ubuntu MATE

Kodi also works on this (after installing some dependencies), using Michael Gorven's repo to install kodi and kodi-bin, although the YouTube plugin fails on Kodi 14.2 on this Ubuntu so I had to downgrade to Kodi 14.1. For some reason I couldn't get Kodi UI sounds to work. From my tests I recommend a...

Re: 720p 60fps video playback

Not officially. However, it is possible with overclock on the Pi 2. I'm not sure about the B+. I've got [email protected] and [email protected] video playing smooth in Kodi on the Raspberry Pi 2 with these settings in config.txt - you'll require a 2A power supply for this: arm_freq=1000 sdram_freq=500 core_freq=...

wolfram-engine dependent on libharfbuzz0a

Taking a look at the dependencies for wolfram-engine on Raspbian, I noticed that one of its dependencies is libharfbuzz0a. This may be a problem when migrating to Raspbian Jessie since this library is replaced with libharfbuzz0b, which very much clashes with the older HarfBuzz library, and it appear...

I'm not sure if there would be any licensing issues here with Oracle, however Oracle Java from the Raspbian repos does work just fine on Ubuntu MATE on Raspberry Pi 2. I successfully tried both versions below. For Java 7: wget http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/pool/main/o/oracle-java7-jdk/oracle...

Re: Netflix on Pi 2

Don't expect netflix on the Pi (or in kodi on any platform) until Netflix changes its DRM requirements. They will only allow Netflix on a "secure" platform which makes it very hard to support Netflix and also allow the "bare metal" hacking on a single platform. How about if a community-produced dri...

Re: no sound, youtube, ubuntu mate

It's the same as in Raspbian. From a Terminal: sudo nano /boot/config.txt Ensure it contains (I assume you are using audio over HDMI): hdmi_drive=2 You may also want to add: hdmi_force_hotplug=1 config_hdmi_boost=4 Save (CTRL+O). Reboot. That should fix any audio issues. If audio stutters in YouTube...

Re: Pi2 with flawless YouTube?

Kodi (formerly XBMC) has a working YouTube plugin now (it was broken for a long time), it indeed works very well from a media-centric interface on the Raspberry Pi 2, including with full HD 1080p video streaming flawlessly over Wi-Fi with a USB adapter. There are plugins for other video sites too. Y...

I'm trying out Ubuntu MATE now on the Raspberry Pi 2, linked from the Raspberry Pi download section. https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/ https://ubuntu-mate.org/raspberry-pi/ It seems much faster than the Linaro-based images. Although it comes with MATE (forked from Gnome 2), it also has no probl...

Re: Install Riscos with Berryboot

I'd like to see the RISC OS Pi team work on making RISC OS compatible with Berryboot. For one thing, it would have to be modified to be able to launch the RISC OS kernel after a running Linux kernel. This may require some sandboxing to essentially run RISC OS on top of a very minimal Linux setup. Se...

How about adding this to BerryBoot? That would have several advantages over NOOBS, namely the ability to share a partition with Raspbian and OpenELEC will all the space available to all OS's. Also, I know this is Ubuntu MATE, but it would be nice to be able to run it with LXDE as well particularly w...

A web-based version of this app (coded in HTML/JavaScript) is available to run from a browser here . It works fine on Web / Epiphany on the R.Pi. That makes 3 versions of this app available, coded in 3 languages, all of which run on all models of the Raspberry Pi. The native version has the advantag...

That sucks. I was hoping to port some games to the the Pi Store.
