Safe using a 12V 80mm PC fan without additional hardware?

I have a spare 80mm PC fan. I like the fan because it is quiet. There seem to be small fans specialised for Pi, but I have a bad memory with small fans (not for Pi); They were very noisy. According to the manufacturer, the fan uses 12V and 0.08+-10%A (that is, 72mA ~ 88mA, I think). Its cable has th...

Ubuntu Mate, 4K only 30fps?

I have tried both the official Ubuntu Mate image and Ubuntu Server + desktopify (mate). The results were the same: if I select 4K resolution, only 30/25/24 Hz are showing in the Refresh rate drop-down list in Monitor Preferences. Why is it so? Is it a hardware limitation, or Mate bug, or is my micro...

Is ReSpeaker 2 the best microphone for cheap voice assistant?

I have been using Google Home Mini, but its AI seems stupid. It annoyingly lacks customisability so I have make some unnecessary efforts to work around it. Also, it has a dumb bug that, even though I have reported it to Google last year, has not been fixed. So, I want to ditch it and create my own f...

Re: Is Pi4 desktop experience supposed to be this bad?

So, you are trying to get a feel for the Pi4 performance on the desktop via VNC? A remote desktop protocol? That will NEVER be a good indicator. There are WAY too many overheads to take in to account. You can ONLY determine suitability as a desktop with a directly attached display. End of. EDIT: Wh...

Re: Is Pi4 desktop experience supposed to be this bad?

Linux has had double buffering issues for ages, so that's nothing new. The result from the lack of it, screen tearing, isn't really a big issue for the vast majority of users. Then, remembering that double buffering eats bandwidth/power consumption, and it takes effort to implement... And I'd guess...

Re: Is Pi4 desktop experience supposed to be this bad?

I have never understood this fascination with wiggling Windows around and making them tear. It's purely cosmetic and doesn't affect functionality at all. Tearing during video playback is most important of course, along with scrolling Windows. Note that Firefox is not our recommended browser and doe...

Re: Is Pi4 desktop experience supposed to be this bad?

if you're not content..... there is always the $1000 board setup to satisfy your needs. go get it! ahh maybe that ain't enough.... there is always the $3800 setup..... I was not saying that Pi4 is useless; As I wrote, I think it is good for a server or controlling hardware. It was just th...

Is Pi4 desktop experience supposed to be this bad?

Finally, I got a micro HDMI adapter and plugged Pi4 to my 4k monitor. I had been using Pi4 without a monitor (VNC). I expected at least the level of smoothness and pleasantness that I had with the cheapest Celeron processor and its integrated graphics on Windows 7 several years ago. But oh, no. Even...

Options for starting Pi4 remotely.

Pi4 seems to be using more than 2W when idling. If I do not need Pi to be running most of the time, and only need it sometimes, wasting 2W+ all the time does not seem very efficient. So, I am looking for a way to start Pi (connected to USB power, having been shut down) remotely. Search results says ...
