Re: Detect bad hard drive and alert?

I will know pretty quickly if its offline or getting full since I access it from Windows, but it would be nice to know if there are any low level errors on either of my 2 drives. Are there any command line utilities that can be scheduled in cron like once a month to do a full scan on both drives for...

Its not a samba issue, you may need to run chmod and change permission of the folder that is shared

Re: Can someone evaluate my NAS & media centre plan?

I wouldn't do it if you need other PCs to access the NAS while you are using XBMC. But its an great idea for a pair of Pis.

Re: RaspBerry Pi(e) Model C (imaginations & wants)

Well, I am aware of the cubieboard, support looks sketchy so I was never much interested.

But if the Foundation plans on being around for a while, eventually they will be able to put a faster CPU in for the same price as current models.

I use team viewer for work, and it would be awesome to be able to make cheap thin clients for remote support!

I guess I need to drop them a line too.

Re: RaspBerry Pi(e) Model C (imaginations & wants)

Would it save much money to have a version without the GPIO and camera ports? I imagine there are quite a few people like me who are more of the software tinkerers (NAS, XMBC, RetroPie), and will never use them. As much as it would be cool to have a pair of SATA ports or a pair of USB 3 ports, I rea...

Is there a way to configure this utility so you don't need to type in the MAC address every time, and instead, just type in the name of the computer on your network?

Detect bad hard drive and alert?

I have my headless Nasberry Pi setup and working great, with a 2nd drive to backup using sync. The question is, is there some way to have the Pi detect if either of the drives start to go bad on me? If so, is there a way to have it send an alert? I would be fine if it wrote like an ALERT.txt to the ...

Not that I agree with using an SSD on the Pi, but wouldn't it have a better chance of working without external power because it uses less power than a HDD?

I get around 11 MB/s with my NAS, I'm not too ashamed by that all.

I'm using Samba with EXT4 drives, rsync to backup to drive 2

Re: Samba Authentication Issues for NAS

chmod -R a+rwx /PATH/TO/SHARE I had the same problem, its a permissions issue with the folders themselves. I did a public folder, but I'm wondering if that might not fix your problem. A few tips, since I'm working to finalizing my setup by following the same guide: 1. Don't format the drives in FAT,...

Suggestion: Filter Foreign Language Forums for New Posts

How about an option you can turn on or off that does not show new posts on the other language forums? To be fair, it could be off my default but I would rather not see the non English posts myself when I click on New Posts.

Question about SSH sessions

So I followed this guide on how to use a RasPi as a NAS: http://www.howtogeek.com/139433/how-to-turn-a-raspberry-pi-into-a-low-power-network-storage-device/ and I have it setup fine and everything, but I'm at the part where I'm syncing the 2nd drive, and its actually taking longer than the initial f...

Re: Simulated Starship Bridge

I don't think it works on the Pi, but a similar game called Quintet works on just about everything else.

www.quintet.us

I could talk to the Dev about it, but I'm sure its going to be limited by the engine, Unity 3D, more than it is his game itself.

I have this setup, and it seems to be working rather well actually. A few things I did different than the guide though: 1. I made my folder public by using different options in the samba config (Google public samba share). I don't care about having a login to use it, but I can see where it could be ...

Yeah, I was more or less thinking there could be a button for file browser, then you could double click a file and it could open up in a text editor.

But that solution will work for my needs if I need it.
