Re: What is Raspbian's default graphic desktop? Is it openbo

Openbox is a window manager. It can do a bit more than some other window managers and could be used almost on its own. Gnome, KDE and Xfce have their own window managers but LXDE does not - so it uses Openbox. It is possible to replace the window managers that come with other desktop environments wi...

Hi :) i think for a list of installed packages synaptic is over kill ... Simpler IMHO to just use a terminal and do abit of research into the many tools that are available .. [...] To LIST ALL INSTALLED PACKAGES use dpkg-query -W --showformat='${Package}\n' That will actually list all packages that...

YMMV - also you can change the disk buffer to be deadline instead of CFQ I used to do this when I ran Linux of sdcard on PC's years back .... I don't think that deadline scheduler would improve performance here. If I understand it correctly, it handles the wite queue differently than CFQ and noop -...

so is this card will be the best or one of the best? not necessary class 4/ 6 may be better for doing lots of random read's [as what linux does in general] writing large amounts of sequential stuff then that should be better YMMV it will work though Can't Linux file systems cache these small writes...

Yes thanks - that is useful. So......is there a way of forcing or starting a new process to a particular core? Texy On my desktop machine I have used schedtool. It was better than taskset for me because it restricts all child processes to the same cpu. I have a launcer: schedtool -a 0x2 -e wine "/h...

Re: SD Card Benchmarks

Has anyone tested this card ? Its got 90mb/sec. I want to get the best card for my pi 2...and also be ready for windows 10 when it comes out. You won't benefit from that 90 MB/s speed because the Pi maxes out at 22 MB/s. (And 'Windows 10' for the RPi is probably not what you expect it to be. Take a...

Re: Differences between Rasp Pi + Python and others?

I'm not sure why your example works in Windows - assuming that it does, because I cannot check. It does not work on my Linux desktop. The usual minimal example would require that you start the main loop:

Code: Select all

from tkinter import *
window = Tk()
window.mainloop()
That should work.

Re: class 10 or calss 4 card?

It should work fine. I use class 10 cards because they are the only ones I can find in the stores. Class 4 or 6 have faster write speeds and cost less. No, the class designation is based on write speeds, so a lower class card won't give you faster writing speed. Higher class means higher writing sp...

Re: My 13 year old son feels cheated

I'm appalled by all these accusations of "lying", "cheating", "deception" etc on the part of the Foundation. "ingroups", "outgroups", WTF? I think it is purely descriptive to say that there were people 'in the know' who could plan optimally at the expense of people then people that could not. That ...

Re: My 13 year old son feels cheated

Your son got a valuable lesson: Even when he did the research and the best choice based on that research, he made a suboptimal choice. He got the valuable lesson to not trust what people write on the Internet. "Business is business", even when it is from a charity. The Foundation denied him a ration...

The 'run' is instructing you, not the computer. Leave it out and type:

and hit the 'Enter' key.

Re: SDs and micro SDs

The class has nothing whatever to do with the read performance of a card. The read speed which is what matters is usually much faster than the write speed which is what class is about. Class 4 and class 6 cards are often (but not always) faster than a class 10 when it comes to reading. At best, a C...

Re: SDs and micro SDs

Class 4 or class 6 cards are better for use with a pi than class 10 cards. Why? Storage performance seems very important for having a system that feels snappy in use. My new B+ has a class 4 card whereas my old B has a class 10 card. The new B+ feels very sluggish. I would say that the difference i...

Re: OS detection as MaxOSX

I don't think that the Pi tells websites anything on its own. It is the browser that does tell what kind of system you are using to access the site. The string that the browser uses to tell the site what kind of system you are on is called a user agent. Try some site that tells directly what is your...

Re: Logitech keyboard & mouse combo

You could probably work around that problem by using the xset (with the option m ) or the xinput command (set-ptr-feedback). If they work when executed from a terminal you could then put the command into a text file and execute that either manually when needed, or automatically at startup/login. I h...

Re: Idle, Idle 3 and Python games please

The conflict is with the name. You could change the name to something else and it would not cause problems and you could run it as well. The problem with the name 'random.py' is that there is a module called 'random' built in to Python and your file called random.py gets loaded instead, overriding t...

Re: Idle, Idle 3 and Python games please

Something is obviously wrong. It seems that you started the program with the command 'idle 3', so you were starting not idle3 but the idle with an additional argument (3). But that is not the problem because on my Pi idle starts fine with that command and it just discard the argument. Maybe if you c...
