Re: RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

The alpha disto for RISC OS for the Pi has now been simplified. The 2Gbyte SD card image is compressed down to 21.7Mbytes at a compression ratio of 98.7%.

Re: RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

WHY does the boot process incl. a dhcp request part and why does the boot process stop when it can't get an ip from dhcp? The intention was to have a configuration that would start up into working networking. If you press Escape and then disable networking all subsequent boots will not have network...

Re: RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

The RISC OS port (see here for Distro: http://www.riscosopen.org/forum/forums/1/topics/1098 ) is now at official alpha status [as of yesterday] and we would welcome any user experiences. The distro should start up with working networking (if it finds a DHCP server) and a browser window explaining ho...

Re: When and if not where?

Now I feel like I'm missing out - might have to buy a transcend SD card I bought several cheap 2G and 4G SD cards at Maplin (£3 or £4 each) and they seem to work with the 3 July distro (but not with earlier ones as improved SD card drivers, both in firmware and RISC OS have been included). Haven't ...

Re: When and if not where?

i have download again the image and now it loads but when i get the * and write !Run Boot i get drive is empty. Any suggestion? At the '*' prompt, you are actually running RISC OS but (most probably) the particular SD card you are using is one that RISC OS is unable to read from. It sees it as 'not...

Re: How to add a distribution to the download section?

I'm afraid we keep the number of distros that we host on the downloads page very small for a number of reasons - there's space there for RISC OS when it's mature What's your definition of 'mature' please? I would say that the RISC OS distro at present ( http://www.riscosopen.org/forum/forums/1/topi...

Re: When and if not where?

i have tried the alpha riscos image in this forum and risc os forum, but when i decompress it i get a corrupted image The download is 27Mbytes in zipped form but the image inside is 240Mbytes so your best bet is to download the zip file and use 7zip (for Windows) to extract the image file. The image...

Re: RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

Great - I'm looking forward to seeing this soon. We perhaps need a pub with a LAN connection to really appreciate it! Well one possibility is to set up a Pandaboard ES to act as a DHCP server (for the Pi) and WiFi connection (it has WiFi on board, to use the pub in question's free WiFi [I presume y...

Re: RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

I have not managed to find a browser so, in the absence of a package manager, how do I install a browser?
It's included in the latest distro, with a few useful links to other sites and a 'Welcome' page on start up.

Got my second Pi

First order 0815 29th Feb from Farnell, arrived 7th May. Ordered a second one on 10th May and it has just been despatched on 27 June, again from Farnell. Good service and the price has dropped to £24.55 plus 20% VAT = £29.46.

Why not try RISC OS? It's still alpha at the moment but it's quite a good programming environment.

There are also links to the ROOL forum but this is a forum for programmers aimed at RISC OS development rather than new users.

Re: RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

I'm still just getting a command line with this new image from 21st June. That is deliberate - any errors in the boot process now drop out to the supervisor prompt rather than start the desktop. That way you can try to investigate/try again etc. So if the SD card does not read at all then you just ...

Re: RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

Seems like a rather huge reduction to me. I wonder if the image is some how corrupt. Either way i'll just wait for the next image i think. The SD card image contains about 24Mbytes of data and 220Mbytes of empty space. Hence the compression. It will thus fit on any SD card of 256Mbytes or greater. ...

Re: RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

Am I the only one with fond memories of risc OS 2? booted to the desktop in a couple of seconds. If you compare like with like, the Raspberry Pi only takes 5 seconds from power up to boot up into RISC OS if you want it to start at the BASIC prompt. Two seconds of that are before RISC OS is started ...

Re: RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

Distro updated again - the SD card image is now 244Mbytes and the download 24Mbytes.

Download: http://www.svrsig.org/RISCOS_Distro.zip (24 Mbytes)

Video of Pi starting up: http://youtu.be/irGVNP5aLe0
from power on to desktop working is 20 seconds.

Re: When and if not where?

Is there some kind of Howto
At the moment it is alpha. Getting tutorials together and other resources is in hand.

However there is a lot of RISC OS software free to download - all you need to do is copy it to where the filer can see it (plus any other instructions that are with the sortware).

Re: RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

Seems one of my 2GB SD cards only has 3862528 sectors available regardless of formatting choice.
The Distro is now just 21Mbytes and requires 3855600 sectors and so should fit most 2G cards.

Updated to latest firmware.

Someone knows how to create an image with the ROM FS and its apps? I think the ROM FS is long gone. Re: When and if not where?

Well just in case of doubt, here it is, using a Sandisk Extreme III 2Gbyte SD card. You can see power on at 5 seconds, the RISC OS Supervisor at 15 seconds. It then starts booting from the SD card and by 38 seconds it is waiting for an IP address from the DHCP server and by 45 seconds it has started...
