Re: DVFS Firmware

There we go. We have a possible workaround now:

Re: DVFS Firmware

I didn't use rpi-update because this came with a thirdparty kinda-bleeding edge distribution (namely Manjaro ARM). So i knew and accepted the risk of things breaking. It triggers me if someone says "non-standard anyway" to justify loss/limitation. Freedom of choice and modification of software/hardw...

Re: DVFS Firmware

This is a known side effect. I'm not going to say it's an issue, because overclocks are non-standard anyway. Are they non-standard? Yes of course but this has no relevance here because this new firmware is unnecessarily limiting functionality/capabilities which were working previously. If you/the d...

You are not the only one. Basically everything requiring more voltage seems broken:

Re: How to setup Dolphin on a Pi 4 with Raspbian Buster

750 MHz for the GPU doesn't work. In all tests i have done everything higher than 600 was actually slower. This is probably another limitation like the 2 GHz limit before it got lifted. Thanks for letting me know. I saw the 600MHz restriction mentioned at https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/c...

Re: How to setup Dolphin on a Pi 4 with Raspbian Buster

You are probably seeing the same graphic glitches as in my screenshot above. It's a GPU driver/mesa issue. On a side note: 750 MHz for the GPU doesn't work. Re: Pi4 as Desktop computer

Absolutely wrong. The point is that the Pi engineering has reached the stage where there is no need to derate components to achieve the specification -- so there is less margin for overclocking. That's good. You will also find that the boundaries are set so that almost all assembled Pis will meet t...

Re: Pi4 as Desktop computer

It is able to run about everything fine at 2 GHz with over_voltage=5/6 and official power supply. Just not this. It shows the PMIC is a tight fit when not even 1.75 GHz works. [Citation needed]. Which SOCs are these? It was mentioned here in the forums somwhere that 2 GHz is the limit for the A72 at...

Re: Pi4 as Desktop computer

Overclocking, by its very definition, is running the thing outside its rated specifications. I'm not saying it is not but every Pi before this one was able to overclock without stability issues. I guess we have yet another case of cheaped out on the wrong end (PMIC). Disappointing? There is absolut...

Re: Pi4 as Desktop computer

I tried to reproduce this under a full 64 bits distro and unfortunately i can. The entire system just dies immediately as soon as it renders the preview image. There is not even a message about this in journalctl as far as i can see. This is pretty disappointing that we can't even get stable overclo...

That makes much more sense indeed. With so many Pi 4's in a closed case you need good cooling :)

That will probably be a long wait. The chroot method is the best option right now if you don't want to use inofficial distros.

Re: How to setup Dolphin on a Pi 4 with Raspbian Buster

@Raspberry Pi Rules!
Did you follow the guide by the letter? I can't speak for Raspian but Manjaro (using the official testing kernel now) works with Dolphin after compiling it myself. Maybe you are missing some libs the pre-compiled build needs?

Re: RPI4: Why is everything still 32-bit?

C is here to stay. Barely any of the other languages matches its performance and simplicity and at the same time it's very close to the metal. The type system of C is in fact pretty weak compared to many of the more modern languages and nothing stops you from type casting. The primitive types are in...

Re: RPI4: Why is everything still 32-bit?

With a 32 bits bus to the RAM you will be bottlenecked even with cache in RAM heavy applications because you will request data from the cache faster than it can fetch from DRAM (cache misses). There is a good reason many other SBCs and smartphones have a dual channel configuration with big caches. N...

The later of what you describe is what i call "enterprise" code. Lots of useless and long namexpaces, builder, worker, factory and god knows what classes. It almost has meme character by now  C++ has a million ways to do the same and i would say barely anyone even scratches the surface of t...

Re: RaspberryPi 4: heatsink or fan

So what is the problem again? If you use the Pi 4 in a well ventilated area and even better vertically mounted somewhere it will just run cool enough not to throttle with normal usage. If you really push it you will need extra cooling of which fans are the cheapest and most effective solution. If yo...

Re: Armor case question

Yes it's anodized and yeah, there is a gap. There are many clones around of this case and they are milled with varying tolerances. A thermal pad is the easiest and just works™. A copper sheet + thermal paste may work but no gurantee.

I have Arctic Thermal Pad on my Pi/case. Pretty much any 6-7 W/mK or higher thermal pad will do. Higher is more expensive.

Re: Armor case question

No, the thermal pads bridge any gap. The heat dissipation of the SoC is so low it doesn't matter. But there is one thing you can do to increase the effectiveness of this case by a lot: Buy proper thermal pads. The included ones are garbage and have useless adhesive on them which insulates more than ...

So basically game over. Makes me wonder what is all the fuzz about with EXT_buffer_storage when this feature doesn't actually affects performance.

Re: latest rpi-update 2.5ghz with 4B 4g

600 MHz + 2 GHz and overvoltage 6 makes it run a good 10°C higher than stock even with heatsink enclosure. Without extra cooling it will be on fire (not really)! I wanted to fine tune the voltage for a while but i'm missing a GPU stresstest. Something like cpuburna53 but for the GPU would be nice.

You seem to misunderstand how this is working. If you pay a VPN provider you pay them for access to their server. You want to connect to your Pi which costs nothing but time to setup the VPN server software and energy for it to run.

More importantly you need a toolchain targeting AArch64. The one Raspian comes with is for AArch32.
