Re: When can we expect USB boot for the Pi 4?

I agree; it's not a big issue, and better the 4B is here now and not USB booting than delaying launch until it could. But let's not indulge in victim blaming when what is bought doesn't match expectations because the official posts neglected or chose not to mention the issue. That is true if you ac...

Re: Test Comparisons on Raspberry Pi 4 on 1 GB, 2 GB and 4 GB models

For a general use case more is always better. If you have an expectation to use it for more than a year or two, more is always better. Even if you really really plan on doing one very specific and defined thing with it, more is almost always better. Recall the quote about 640K being more than enough...

Re: Are Speaker Magnets A Problem For Pi?

If you discover a problem, mount a sheet of steel between the speaker and the Pi. Magnetic fields are tricky to shield. A simple sheet will just cause the field to wrap around the sides. This is based on spending much money and engineering effort to try and shield CRT monitors from a large transfor...

Re: When can we expect USB boot for the Pi 4?

I'm not complaining. I am taking exception to the attitude of "why don't you just use hybrid boot?" as if that is the only answer needed or desired. I fully support the RPT implementing network booting *first*, even though I have no intent to use it. That's a matter of supporting the RPF goals (edu...

Not at a system to test and more familiar with gnome but does the command line option of "--full-screen" work? If so, edit the menu command to match

Re: When can we expect USB boot for the Pi 4?

If it's so important to you that your SD card socket remain empty, then by all means wait for updated EEPROM code. My guess is that very few see any distinction or care and would rather get on with running Raspbian from a much faster/larger USB device. If people didn't care about the distinction, t...

Re: Pi4 as Desktop computer

Like I said in another thread, if there's a problem, please give details. "A guy at work had a problem with chromium" or anything along those lines is not something that can be investigated. An office full of people here do not see most of the problems you've mentioned. Quite a few of them use the ...

Re: When can we expect USB boot for the Pi 4?

It's simple enough to have /boot on SD card and / (the rootfs) on a USB drive, and that works fine for now (if you really can't wait). That's how my 4B2 is configured at the moment. I swapped it for my Pi 3B in this case , and it's been working great since I received it. Yeah well when I tried that...

Re: Fan failure?

fans are normally controlled, so not running all the time. running a fan constantly for 2 weeks probably would screw the bearings. Connect to 5 v, then use an opto-isolator board to turn it on and off via gpio only when it gets hot enough Any "decent" fan should run for years. I have had Unix and L...

Re: When are people in the U.S. getting their Pi 4s?

You might be surprised. One of the research chemists at a company I worked in that era got permission to add an HDD to his PC. He was given a budget of $1000. He was ecstatic when he found a company that was bringing out a new line of HDDs with discounted introductory prices. He was able to get a 1...

Re: WiringPi to be deprecated?

This is one of the sad outcomes of success in the Free Software movement... Things get popular, distribution expands and gets used by people that either don't understand the model or just plain don't care. As an end user, you are entitled to exactly the support that you paid for. Under many licenses...

Re: Pi4 as Desktop computer

Please don't reply to complaints with the dismissive "you are doing it wrong". The guy above does have a point about Firefox being a steaming pile on the 4, but I avoid it so.... But, I do recognise the frustration the poster has whatever the reason. For the growth of Pi, you need to be more unders...

Re: Pi4 as Desktop computer

I have a Pi 3B+ and it seems to work just fine as a desktop computer. Has stayed in exactly the same place on my desktop, and been very well behaved. Is there some reason I should be concerned that the 4G 4B I have on order is going to be less well behaved? Silliness aside, its all about horses for ...

Re: Upgrade ussue Ubuntu Mate 18.04 on Pi 3B+

The issue is that you have a conflict between linux-firmware-raspi2 and bluez-firmware 1.2-4+rpt1~bionic1.0. The "bluez" package is for Bluetooth dongles based on the Broadcom BCM203x chipset. I don't use bluetooth on my PI 3b+ and forced the install. Does not seem to have any disastrous results. If...

Re: Meaningless boot problem

The corruption issue is that you can have buffered writes that are not successfully completed when you do a hard power off. The result is a very confused file system if you just cut the power. The low level wear leveling adds another layer of unhappiness. We use PIs as vision processors on FRC robot...

Re: Suggestions for a cheap, wireless, and reliable Keyboard/Mouse?

It depends on where you want to land in the ergonomics and key feel versus price spectrum. I hate mushy keyboards and am slightly fussy about things like where the special characters are in the layout. In terms of good keyboards, I really like the logitech K840, however that is both wired and expens...
