Re: RPI 4 USB-C supply

Actually the whole point of rigorous standards, such as USB, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, and USB C, is to provide interoperability between vendors. A good thing, no? Why wouldn't I buy a RFP/RPT power supply for each Pi? Because I've already got plenty of 5V supplies sitting around doing nothing. Many of the...

Well it completely depends on what he is trying to do and what sort of uptime/reliability he desires. I have seen fairly generic commercial PC motherboards embedded in high end laser engravers, with said PCs running Windows 10. We are talking pieces of kit running upwards of 1.5 million USD. Not wh...

Re: laser range finder accuracy

Do the math and see if the accuracy of your range finder gets you a good enough answer. I suspect that the accuracy of your range finder and your imu will be such that your concept will not be particularly accurate. This is based on work I have been involved with on FRC teams. Building targeting sys...

Re: Good reasons to buy the latest Rpi 4 with 4G RAM?

If you are interested in using the Pi as a desktop I would get the 4 GB model. If you are unsure what you want to do I would get the 4 GB model. If you have a specific use case that is really and truly expected to last the entire expected lifespan of the Pi and you are really really sure I would buy...

Re: RPI 4 USB-C supply

USB C issue is that the 4B does not have the appropriate resistor to fully implement the USB C "device type" part of the spec. Due to this smart chargers, that can supply greater than 5V don't know what it wants. Unfortunately various vendors have tacked their own fast charging extensions on and may...

Re: Linux pipe command to copy

It looks like that command transforms the encoding. What does it output upon successful completion? To clarify the pipe command "|" allows you to redirect stdout from the terminal to the input of the next command in the pipeline, For this to work the information must be provided to stdout. Likely a ...

Re: Raspberry pi 4B 4GB doesn`t detectLogitech unifying dongle after upgrade

I have a 4B 4GB with at USB 3.0/SATA SSD and fast USB3.0 USB stick on the USB 3.0 ports and two USB receivers on the 2.0 ports (I like the Microsoft media keyboard and Logitech MX Master mouse). Works fine either connected via ethernet to my router or via WiFi. Said router is a DLink DIR-860L which ...

Re: Network boot over WiFi

That's true, but booting the device opens up a whole different can of worms, since absolutely everything is coming over the wifi. WPA is "broken" now, and most WPA2 can be cracked reasonably easily as well. Care to elaborate. Assuming a robust password, WPA is not easily "broken" and WPA2 is even w...

In short no. If you are mounting the potentially messed up SD card on another computer, you are root on that computer. As stated you can have full read/write privileges on the SD card and change anything you want. However commands like passwd are running on your local computer and would effect its p...

Re: Want to Telnet from Android to Multiple Raspberry Pi's

You might want to take a step back and explain what it is you are trying to achieve. Setting up Pis with telnet is easy. Connecting to a "bunch" of Pis using telnet from a Android device and doing much with all the connections with the real estate of a typical Android device may be less fun. Telnet ...

Re: Raspberry Pi Bird Recognition

We use Pi to do image processing for FRC robtics (find and track various vision targets and objects). I am not one of the vision mentors but I am fairly certain we are processing around 30 fps. Though for your application you just want to detect movement and trigger on that which is a simpler problem.

So for once it is good to be old/insensitive.... I am quite happy with Youtube's performance on my 4B. Was not a happy camper with the 3B+ and broke things in many ways trying to get better performance out of Chromium. I also tend to watch YouTube in a window versus fullscreen, which may help.

Re: Raspberry Pi4 EEPROM update package - beta

Even high-end motherboards for Intel compatible processors don't have a jumper to disable reflashing the BIOS. The costs of such a jumper are two-fold: the actual manufacturing costs and technical support for the clueless who are holding it wrong. I just spent yesterday afternoon resetting 50 such ...

I would add Mate to the list. Lighter than Gnome or KDE but richer set of options than LXDE. I find it easier to tweak to what I want. Runs very well on the Pi 3B+ and 4B. Ubuntu Mate runs well on the 3B+. It is not available for the 4B yet. Raspbian Lite (Buster) + Mate installs cleanly and works v...

Find a theme that you like and add in the shortcut keys that you want. Any LXDE compatible theme should allow you to add in the shortcuts. Google for "adding terminal shortcuts to lxde theme" to get info on how to do this.

Re: Raspberry Pi4 EEPROM update package - beta

You can only do a manual update if you have root privileges when using the rpi-eeprom-update tool or are in the gpio group to do it directly using flashrom. https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/booteeprom.md mentions a way of write protecting the EEPROM in hardware but the...
