Re: Motion - MMAL camera

Hi skooby - try running using this command line in the same directory: ./motion -n -c motion-mmalcam.conf Note the ./ at the start - this is important as it ensures the MMAL version of motion is run, and not the installed version. Also, you shouldn't need to use sudo. The command line you've given w...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@mahtiaivo - no, you didn't miss the option as that patch isn't in the original motion's trunk or 3.2 release code. My goal is to focus on core functionality relating to the Pi camera, so I won't be considering bringing over patches at this time. However I do plan to expose the Pi camera controls vi...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

Hi dpguest - please see my post above here for that info: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=356814#p356814 You can get the tarball containing the binary and config file from the first post in this thread. I'm working on the command line build for the Github source at the moment - wil...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

Ok, the source is now up on Github at this URL: https://github.com/dozencrows/motion The master branch is an untouched fork of the original; all the MMAL changes are in the branch mmal-test . Note that this is currently just a drop of the configured source - there's no means provided yet for buildin...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

Hi fred - sorry to hear you're getting these problems. I personally haven't been experiencing freezes, and have had motion-mmal running for half an hour successfully (then stopped it myself). Please supply a copy of your motion config file and command line if these are changed, so I can try them. Ar...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@bjornatic, @yusuk - my apologies - I suspect you're wanting information on how to install and run my test version, which I haven't made clear. I would recommend trying the following: 1. Install the standard Raspbian motion package via apt-get. This should add all the dependencies. 2. Unzip the moti...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

It may well work with libjpeg8 - I will have to try it.
libjpeg62 is listed as the dependent package for Debian in the Motion wiki, which is why I used it - see http://www.lavrsen.dk/foswiki/bin/view/ ... or_Install

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

Try installing libjpeg62 via

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libjpeg62
That's what the test binary is linking against.

ok thanks, I have problem with libjbeg with Motion of you compil. fred Which version of libjpeg to you have installed? When I run this on my Pi: find /usr/lib -iname libjpeg* I get /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/libjpeg.a /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/libjpeg.so.8 /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/libjpeg....

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@bjornatic - you can find out lots of information about using Motion here: http://www.lavrsen.dk/foswiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome. Most of the information should apply to this version of motion, as the only part I have modified is the image capture side (and not compiled in the SQL database support)....

Motion - MMAL camera

I've had some success writing a new module for Motion that reads frames directly from the Pi camera via the MMAL API. A test binary and config file is available here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xdfcxm5hu71s97d/motion-mmal.tar.gz This binary is based on Motion SVN trunk at revision 557, and is compile...

Re: Motion - Ip Camera Possible

@craigc: good spot of the lack of rotation - I missed this in my integration of the mmal camera module with the motion main loop. Looks like it should be fairly straightforward to include, based on what the netcam module does.

Re: Motion - Ip Camera Possible

Cheers kmdm, I'll take a look at that Github version. Profiling didn't show encoding as being a performance hit ("time everything, assume nothing"). Actually motion-mmal is spending 30%-40% of CPU time updating the reference frame, and the image difference processing is taking around a further 25% o...

Re: Motion - Ip Camera Possible

Thanks for the replies! I'll look into getting the source up on to Github over the next few days (something I've not done before). I also need to sort out the build process; I've currently got it cross-compiling through Eclipse which won't suit everyone. The additional Pi Videocore libs & headers ha...

Re: Motion - Ip Camera Possible

I've had some initial success creating a version of motion which has an "MMAL" camera module and options - if you want to try using it, I've shared it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xdfcxm5hu71s97d/motion-mmal.tar.gz Please be aware this is very early and experimental: [*] Based on motion SVN trunk...

Re: Motion - Ip Camera Possible

@Sarge - if you add the web server's user account (usually www-data) to the video group as described above, that will ensure you have the correct permissions even after a reboot.

Re: Motion - Ip Camera Possible

Rather than blanket change the permissions on /dev/vchiq, it might be safer and more robust to add the user account under which the web server runs to the video group, then reboot.

E.g. for me using nginx, this was:

Code: Select all

sudo usermod -a -G video www-data
sudo shutdown -r now

Re: Profiling on the Pi?

It seems there have been problems building tcmalloc (used in gperftools) for ARM in the past - e.g. http://code.google.com/p/chromium-os/issues/detail?id=34620. So it may not be in complete working order for all ARM CPUs. There is an implementation with gperftools but it doesn't seem to be working f...

Cross compiler differences

Does anyone know if there are any specific differences between the cross compilers on the raspberrypi tools github and those available say in the standard Ubuntu repositories? The difference in naming (arm-linux- vs arm-bcm2708-linux-) makes me wonder... On a side note, how are the bcm2708 variants ...

Re: Rasberry as DreamBox? Network version.

Maybe it's my tuner after all. I heard that devices based on IT9135 chipset (yours) are more sensitive and get better signal strength than RTL2832U which is the one i own... I've been trying to get reliable recording on the Pi using an RTL2832U device (August DVB-T205) in the UK, and seem to have a...
