MMAL Motion - tuning & optimisations

I've not had much chance to work on MMAL camera support in Motion for a while... but for this Easter, I'm back with a vengeance  ... On Github, you'll find some new options and capabilities in the mmal-test branch here: https://github.com/dozencrows/motion/tree/mmal-test. I've only distribu...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

I've been googling for a while but I cannot find the sources for the motion-mmal patch/plugin. Could you kindly post the git/mercurial/svn/bzr repo url for it. Thanks. The URL is present several times already in this very thread... but just to help - https://github.com/dozencrows/motion/tree/mmal-t...

At last, I hear you all cry... 8-) The prebuilt binary is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xdfcxm5hu71s97d/motion-mmal.tar.gz Updated source is in the mmal-test branch of my github repo: https://github.com/dozencrows/motion/tree/mmal-test Please have a crack at testin...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

Just wanted to let you know I'm working on the still image exposure problem - it looks like the raspistill fix works for motion-mmal on the first run, but there's something else not right as subsequent runs only yield black images. Rebooting the Pi makes it work again... probably something about shu...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

The config file should be present in the motion-mmal tarball, called motion-mmalcam.conf - you need to run it using a command line like this: ./motion -n -c motion-mmalcam.conf This assumes the current working directory contains the extracted tarball files. Note the ./ at the start of the line - thi...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@lebeck: please try with mmalcam_use_still turned off - there's an issue with how still capture is configured, which causes the darkening you're experiencing. @joantune: Have a look at my motion repository on GitHub. This was forked from the "official" motion repository, and the master branch is the...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

I'm afraid I've no experience with rawvideo and mencoder to make further suggestions at the moment. motion-mmal does have some issues with reliability of frame rate in encoded video; however I don't yet know if this is due to performance or poor synchronisation timing. If I have some time this weeke...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

Unfortunately the motion detection algorithm used in motion is also quite a load on the Pi, so just disabling ffmpeg output isn't enough on its own to achieve much better framerates. It also depends on whether you turn on some of the other image processing options such as masking or smart masking. I...

Re: Motion security camera + live streaming

Hi @bongdw, You might like to try the adapted version of the motion package that I modified to work with the Pi. There's a great how-to blog entry here: http://rbnrpi.wordpress.com/project-list/setting-up-wireless-motion-detect-cam/ And if you run into problems, try browsing this rather long thread ...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

Very interesting thought on the inherent motion analysis in H.264... that's worth some research, I think. The CPU can certainly get easy access to the encoded H.264 data, but as you say the question is how easily and quickly can it process the motion related data. I'm gradually looking at options to...

Re: Can't get motion to work

The key message are the ones that end in ENOSPC - that's the Pi camera failing to start up properly. There could be a host of reasons why, but I understand in essence there isn't enough free memory (probably on the GPU) for it to operate. First things to try: Reboot the Pi and try again - but don't ...

Hi again nazargren! Unfortunately you will have to save a file somewhere in order to run the on_picture_save command to mail it. No other way around it. Did you try my suggestion in another thread of following this command with one to delete the file after it is sent? E.g. on_picture_save mpack -s A...

Re: Can't get motion to work

Hi dnhimelic! Are you using the version of motion in the Raspbian package repository? That version unfortunately won't work as it doesn't recognise the Pi camera. Instead you could try my customised version of motion, which is discussed in this rather long thread: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/v...

Re: Motion MMAL Email

If you mount a network share in your Pi's file system (NFS or Samba), you can change the target_dir setting to point to that location if you want to preserve images off-Pi. Alternatively some folk use a temporary RAM drive - I'm pretty sure there's some posts elsewhere on the forums about that. Memo...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

Interesting stuff... I think tuning frame rates, image size and quality settings are all you can do right now. Possibly overclocking if you want to get more done? Though that is risky. My testing with your settings suggests that the actual streaming side causes the biggest CPU hit - when motion star...

Re: Motion MMAL Email

Hi nazargren - thanks for trying motion-mmal! A quick test shows that on_picture_save does work for motion-mmal; it is worth noting that even if you provide a command for this, a picture will still be saved to the directory specified in the target_dir setting. The command you set for on_picture_save...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@lancevo3 : that sounds like you're running with an incorrect configuration file - "/dev/video0 not found" means motion is trying to use Video4Linux as its camera source, which presumably you don't have set up for use with the Pi camera (and don't need to with motion-mmal). Double check your comman...

Re: Encoding Video & Taking Stills

I think you might be able to try something without recourse to prioprietary "secret" information. One approach that might work is to set up the camera via the mmal library so that it grabs video as raw YUV and doesn't pass it straight on to the H.264 encoder as per raspivid. Instead, you provide you...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

Thanks for trying that, Jan. My suspicion from the ldd output is that something's got corrupted on your system - possibly motion, possibly libavcodec. That error message isn't something I've seen before. If someone else knows more, it'd be great to hear from them! Did you use the prebuilt version fr...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

Hi Jan! You shouldn't need to use root or sudo to run this version of motion - the default "pi" user should work fine. If you try that and get an error about "/dev/vchiq" and permissions, try adding the "pi" user to the "video" group like this: sudo usermod -a -G video pi sudo shutdown -r now The re...
