Re: How to make turn a custom raspberry pi install into a image?

Is there a simple GUI program? Yes! At least, there is a simple GUI program to make your own image. It's Pi-Power-Tools . img-mode.png I did look at your software, does it allow you to copy the current raspberry pi install to an img file? OK, I've recently had several requests for this exact featur...

Re: Chromium autostart in fullscreen

Raspberry Pi OS Buster uses a global autostart file - /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart, but Raspbian Stretch used a user-specific file, located at /home/pi/.config/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart. If the OP found an outdated tutorial, it very likely told them to edit .config/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autos...

I'm assuming you want to attach an EEPROM or FRAM chip to your Pi, and use that for storage.
No, I think the OP is asking how to make changes to the Pi4's internal EEPROM.

Re: Usefull / good programs to have on your Pi

Well, since this thread has been raised from the dead by HermannSW, I might as well add another app to this list. Or should I say, app s ? :P Pi-Apps is a simple RPi app store that's full of open-source RPi software. None of these apps are available on the repositories. https://github.com/Botspot/pi...

Update:

changing the v4l2 config with

Code: Select all

v4l2-ctl --set-fmt-video=width=1280,height=720,pixelformat=H264
results in a smooth video with low latency.
Whoa nice!
BTW I'm monitoring your posts and posting them in the box86 zoom thread.

Re: Pi Power Tools: General Purpose Disk Image & SD Card Manager

Another update: I have released a beta version of Vdesktop that fixes all the "Aw, Snap!" errors! Chromium no longer crashes, and even better: the VM has full access to OpenGL. Now you can play Youtube from within vdesktop using Chromium! Now how wacky is that? ;) Before I can add this new version t...

Thanks for the conky reference. I will check it out. Currently I am running my Pi headless for this project but for connected Pis, conky could be a choice. Yeah, if you want to go down that route, don't be surprised when your conky looks terribly ugly. And conky won't start automatically on boot ei...

No problem, thanks for asking. Once you've made your image, PPT will come in quite handy either for making a quick edit or for flashing your SD cards.

Re: How to download AND extract a .img.xz file?

I'm glad "xz -d" works! Just for my interest, why are you using "bs=10M" for the dd command? The cp command (which is very fast in my tests) uses just 128KB block size (see strace cp ....) In my tests, I found it gives a bit of a buffer. It usually cut down on download time by around 3 seconds. (an...

Thanks for this. Pi-Apps installed fine. Chromium media edition and TBOplayer installed fine. It makes me think it could be something like EPEL repo for centos. Need Testers: vdesktop VM runs any RPi OS with OpenGL graphics!

Many of you advanced users have heard of, or even used, my vdesktop script. It uses systemd-nspawn and a few other tricks to 'boot' a RaspiOS .img file as a graphical virtual machine. You'd be able to interact with the GUI desktop of the container, and make changes to the img before flashing it to a...

Re: How to download AND extract a .img.xz file?

Additionally, in my script I go a couple steps further by loading the first 100MB of the img into cache first, and also it uses the buffer package to overcome I/O bottlenecks for maximum efficiency. Sounds like you have thought about it!!! Thank you. Believe it or not, with enough optimization , it...

You'll always have /sbin/init as that's the program that the kernel starts (unless you override it in /boot/cmdline.txt).
Another good answer. Too bad init can also be a symlink. Though again, I suppose the script could handle that and follow the symlink before getting the filetype.

Re: Is there any executable file that is 100% going to be in /bin?

Do you mean like "file /bin/sh" ? I think /bin/sh will always be there even if its a link to /bin/dash That could probably work. But I'd have to find a way to follow the symlink or else when I try to detect the mimetype it will look like this: $ file --mime-type -b /media/pi/pi-power-tools/bin/sh i...

Is there any executable file that is 100% going to be in /bin?

No matter what OS, no matter if it has a GUI, no matter if it uses systemd or sysvinit, are there any executable files that are going to exist in 100% of linux releases? Weird question, I know. Re: How to download AND extract a .img.xz file?

You are using "busybox unzip - -p" Perhaps it should be changed to "xz -d" or similar. See "man xz" for details. I'm familiar with xz so you think I would have tried that in a pipe!
