Re: Raid?

<t>There are actually two threads where we're discussing RAID options. The basic answer is that our options are either to do a software RAID (which unless you're putting more drives on there than would be worthwhile due to speed restrictions of the USB the r-pi should handle software RAID just fine)...

Re: Point of Sale Terminal (ssh w/ X Forwarding)

<t>David (who I believe said he was from Spain in the intro thread so I'm guessing his native language is Spanish) mentioned a similar concern in another thread. His basic worry is that there will be a need to recompile every driver for an ARM environment and he wants to know how you will surmount t...

Re: What happen with USB key size(alpha prototype)?

<r>The USB thing was always just a prototype. Even before they got the alpha boards it was broadly advertised that the footprint goal of the final product would be credit card sized. Re: USB/NAS Enclosure

<t>It's definitely the same price wise for initial set up, but I'm thinking long term here. A PC, even an older one, is going to draw a lot more power than a simple enclosure would. The idea I'm shooting for here is to save money in the long term in power consumption using an r-pi and enclosure over...

Re: USB/NAS Enclosure

Indeed it is, have you ever used it? I've found plenty of such drives on-line but I'm looking for first hand experience with the device. (I'm also not opposed to each drive being in its own enclosure daisy-chained to each other to simulate a single large enclosure)

Re: So, this thing called Linux.

<r>That's a legit reason. One thing I did when I was first playing with Linux is I took an old hard drive and put it in my PC. Then I built a switch that would let me turn on either my Linux drive or my windows drive. Now days, as long as you have that spare drive you can always set up a dual boot e...

Re: What have we missed?

<r>One really interesting thing I've noticed while watching this thread is the fact that a lot of people have a lot of different ideas about that one item that simply *everyone* uses and the r-pi needs to integrate since everyone will use it... but most the time it only one person mentioning it with...

<t>My guess is that there probably won't be bulk discounts (and this is just my guess, I haven't heard anything from them about it or not). <t>I want to do this exact thing as well! One of the big things I'm looking for is a USB that can handle RAID 5. I know that Linux can emulate a RAID, but if my Linux install craps out on me, I don't think I could remake the RAID of a new install of Linux. But if I had an enclosure doing the work, a...

<t>hmm... with this scenario hooking up more than one to an r-pi at a time probably would not work based on the r-pis ethernet limitations, but if you have a gigabit network you can easily have multiple r-pis with a kinect on each one. Is the kernel module closed? I knew the GPU blob was closed source (but not by r-pi's choice) but I thought the drivers that interacted with it were not closed sourced. Wouldn't that include the kernel?

Okay, so you're worried about a tiny little GPU blob that's closed sourced and unused by 99.9% of the clientele? I'm all for open sourced stuff too, but isn't that taking open vs closed sourced to a Hatfield vs Mccoy level?

well, I was board back towards the beginning and looked through the users profiles of the low number user ids and several of them I think were either automatically created with the forum or set up as test accounts, so you could be as low as 140! ;)
