In Ubuntu, a flavour of Linux just like Debian is, WINE is a standard bit of software. Some programs are OK with it, some not. One which works very well is LT-Spice which is only available as a Windows download, but runs under WINE just as quickly, if not more so.

I have done the thing with the USB cable and no SD card; the PC sees the Broadcom chip. I've tried it with just the RPi power supply on its own, and with a bigger supply plus 1800uF when plugged into the logic card I'm developing. I've taken care with logic levels etc, checked with 'scope beforehand...

That YouTube video gives me an idea how to capture the last line of text before the black screen. Would that help to fix the problem? Sounds like some over-ambitious next step trips it up.

Here's some things I've tried:
Fresh load Raspian Lite with Imager onto SD card. Swapped that card into a RPi3 which has been working fine. RPi3 boots to command line OK. Sudo shutdown -h now. Swapped card back, Pi3 boots good, as it did. Put 1st card into Pi0, same fault.

This is another case where a schematic would be useful. So far as I can tell, all the USB sockets, the +5 GPIO pins and the +5 power input are copper connected.

Hippy, I think you're right. None of the 4 SMPS outputs had any voltage. The DVM readings floated about at a few mV, implying open circuits. I could prune the appropriate inductor on the output of the 3V3 regulator. First, I will check all the regulator outputs to see which, if any, still work.

Hi Dirk,
It didn't get at all hot, it just died. The MXL7704 quad power supply features over-current protection so I'm surprised it did not resurrect without the faulty breadboard connected.

I've just bricked my Pi 3 B+ because of a short, 3.3 to GND, on a breadboard I had connected

. I was wondering if pruning out a 3-terminal regulator and feeding 3.3V back in through the GPIO would work. Red LED lights, green doesn't. A schematic would be useful!

sudo pip3 install bitstring worked for me, thanks.
So why is there more than one version of Python in the NOOBS install? It just means that when I install some module it disappears into a pit of darkness. I should like to use 3.5.3, and delete earlier versions.

On my Pi at the command line I typed
pip install bitstring
then in the Python shell I typed
help ("modules")
but bitstring doesn't show in the list.
I tried on my W10 machine as well, same result. What to do?
