Re: Alternative to a PSU?

Be careful as the micro-usb power connector on the rPi does not fit the mini-usb cables which most people have a few of. I got mine to boot by soldering onto component D17 on the back of the board with 0V GND closest to the board edge and +5V about 10mm from the board edge. My 4.7Volts was ok with t...

Re: Exactly 5v?

Checking the voltage at D17 with a multimeter, 4.90 Volts across there is what I get running the pi off a micro-USB power supply from RS which was meant for the Pi. At the same time, my PS2 old keyboard and PS2 old mouse work just fine from a single USB to PS2+PS2 adapter cable in the upper of two u...

Re: Help for a noob

If you do not have a HDMI flatsreen tv or monitor then try finding a 2-10 year old tv which accepts video cables with yellow phono socket ends. Though it worked with limited resolution, it did work. The worst that you'd have to spend is 2 pounds on a yellow ended video cable, if you don't know anyon...

getting a network printer to work

At home. we have a network printer on ethernet from the same router as the internet connection. A long ethernet cable to my room connects that router to an ethernet switch, which I am using to extend the number of computers in my room which can go on the internet at the same time. A 1m ethernet cabl...

Re: Small Display

I'm worried and don't know. I've been fine with a 24-inch monitor with HDMI but my newish 22-inch screen did not have one. The big newish 40-inch flatscreen worked with both HDMI and S-video, but on S-video it was using greatly reduced resolution and unable to change it. Try searching amazon, ebay a...

Re: what linux prompt

You might want to type startx and get to the graphical and icon linux which comes with it. If you got the 26th April version from Farnell, that has a couple of games and useful things. If you got an early April version from another vendor then it will be like a blank Windows which does not do anythi...

Re: How to start using your Raspberry Pi

I thought that a picture of a typical arrangement which works could help beginners. Note the single usb to PS2 splitter cable allowing use of an old keyboard and mouse. The spare usb slot wrote to a usb memory stick and sometimes finds sd cards plugged into the external thing. When working normally ...

Re: Optimized toolchain used for raspbian?

I read somewhere that Ubuntu 10.04 has a way to compile for Arm6 which might be like raspberry pi. That was from guys struggling with latest Ubuntu which compiles for Arm7 instead.

This is not my speciality, so I can't comment further, but I hope this helped.

Re: Font size

I got different results on first boot of an r-Pi with debian squeeze from RS vs from Farnell. next I'll try at the text prompt after first boot sudo nano /boot/config.txt which might access some settings for the display screen resolution my rPi from RS into a BENQ senseye3 monitor with HDMI did not ...

Re: Record USB audio input

Check for ground connections. A multimeter from your audio device earth to a bare metal part of your audio computer such as the 'H' on the metal of the ethernet socket can test whether there is an earth connection. Some soundcards tie the cableground outer sheath to the earthed metal case, and some ...

Re: Frustrated keyboard issues

This might be loosely related. I got an old PS2 keyboard and old PS2 mouse to work off one usb socket. That uses a PS2 to usb keyboard and mouse adapter cable, which can be bought on ebay, amongst other places. That works in text prompt and after startx, but only if the usb is plugged into the upper...

Re: Setting up HDMI output

Both of my newish flatscreens did nothing at first boot. My BENQ senseye3 is brand new, yet acknowledged no EIDID query which stalled the first boot. I got the rPi to work by plugging in the yellow SVID connector to a different telly, which gets big text low res but it boots. Next try with HDMI work...

This attempts to contribute to the post title "how do I get it running properly" and I have not yet reached the stage of connecting to the internet addressed by the posts. Cables ===== Needed: -one old PS2 keyboard and mouse adapter cable to single usb This worked in the upper of two usb slots but n...
