Re: Anyone in the US get a ship date from Newark (Element/14

I ordered on March 3 and my Order Conf. Number was: 188xxx. My Pi arrived today, but sadly it will not boot. I get a red power light, but nothing more. :( A good starting point is the RasPi Troubleshooting wiki page: http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting . If you only get a red power light, it's m...

Re: Anyone in the US get a ship date from Newark (Element/14

I just got shipping confirmation from Newark: my Model B is to be shipped today 6 June 2012. I ordered 4 March 2012. Most recent estimated ship date at newark.com was 14 June 2012.

Better plug in my heater (so much more poetic than "soldering iron") in case I need to touch up X1 :-)

Re: NO usb device works

Even a broken Pi is a great "educational device" :D. Is there a more permanent solution to this? Keeping the crystal below 15c is not so easy. I really don't want wait for RS slow support. Some suggestions if you're handy with a "heater" (so much more poetic than "soldering iron" :-)) 1. Resolder X...

Re: Open/Closed or Somewhere-in-between source?

I'm of two minds about Stallman. On the one hand he can appear to be seriously over-the-top, and yet on the other he's visionary, not only predicting the way things would turn, but also providing a mindset to avert a danger nobody else had spotted. Simon RMS is sui generis . He is probably the most...

Re: Open/Closed or Somewhere-in-between source?

Perhaps proprietary software is not inherently immoral, but it certainly can lead to immoral behavior. Free (libre) software protects you from this. However we have law enforcement to protect ourselves from companies producing software which breaks the law, and there's nothing actually stopping som...

But then [RMS] also called Steve Jobs evil on the day after he died so not much of a fan there either! I don't think RMS called Steve Jobs evil. If you have a quote to that effect, please supply a link. RMS did accuse Jobs of evil things, such as turning computers into "digital handcuffs" and using...

Re: power, usb, sd and keyboard issues.

I measured resistance on my f1/f2 fuses at 5.5/5.52ohms each with no power to the pi. But really, I shouldn't be experiencing any voltage drop at all using a powered hub, although it depends on how good the hub is apparently. I'll have to take it apart and see what's what! Glad to know that my usb ...

If such a thread is going to exist, then I have a question I'd very much like answered: Richard Stallman and the free software institute seem to think that propriety software is actually immoral. But I can't for the life of me find out why . Does anyone know? Here's a link to GNU's philosophy page:...

Re: Pi dies after long time - heat?

If your case is a good thermal insulator -- e.g., plastic -- with no ventilation then I could easily see RasPi overheating. One solution is a perforated box so air can flow. If you put heat sinks on the SoC and USB/Ethernet chips this can help provided that there is some air flow. Another solution m...

Here are some hypotheses. JMO/YMMV You say your voltage is ~5V. In general, peop...

Re: USB & Ethernet dead

I had the same issue (Ethernet and USB did not work). I looked at the output of the 25MHz crystal (X1) with an oscilloscope, and realized it wasn't oscillating. I touched up the solder joints on the crystal, and it now works like a champ. It's a little upsetting that I had to do that, but it's fast...

Re: Ethernet only running half-duplex, 10M

Some suggestions: When a 10/100 Ethernet over twisted pair first starts up, it tries to auto-negotiate the fastest possible setting. If auto-negotiation fails, both ends drop down to 10Mb/s half duplex as the default setting. I would first try running "ping" for a while to see how well 10Mb/s HDX is...

One possibility: Check diode arrays D2 and D3 near HDMI connector S3 very carefully through a strong magnifier. If the red differential pair is shorted together with a solder bridge you'll lose the red signal. I don't know which pair is red.

Re: Maybe time for an RMA ?

There are two other components that can cause this sort of problem. The first is the micro USB cable: some of these have very thin wires that have enough voltage drop to cause RasPi to fail after a while. The other is RasPi's polyfuse F3. As RasPi warms up the resistance of F3 increases and if the p...

Re: VIA's entry into the low cost computer market

If the boot code, like on the APC, is in a fixed BOOT prom chip, unbricking your device involves physically removing the PROM and reprogramming it. This might require unsoldering the ROM chip, and an ePROM burner. If the boot code, like on the Pi, is on the SD card, unbricking your device involves ...

Indeed. More importantly, ... our hardware will be unlocked ... install it on a microSD card and re-flash Which, with 4x usb, vga and the price including a proper psu, could well make it a pi-eater. Simon IMO it will boil down to how well each community works and how open the documentation ends up ...
