Re: TUTORIAL: File Sorting on the Raspberry Pi

RENAMING FILES WITH TIMESTAMPS: Gavinmc42's brief comment about timestamps got me curious, so I decided to take a deep dive on extracting a file's timestamp and burning it into the file name itself! This is not so much a file sorting technique but a file renaming technique – although, under the rig...

I think ejolson's ribbing you. It's Not the Unix Way¹ to put spaces in filenames....... do your best not to create filenames with !, + or ~ in them. I originally posted my tutorial in the General Discussion because it's broadly useful for people of many skill levels. Hence my "secretary and scienti...

Re: TUTORIAL: File Sorting on the Raspberry Pi

Nice rant. Your solution to put spaces in filenames is particularly amusing. My solution is not dependent on spaces. It's just a clean-looking, human-friendly aesthetic. If someone doesn't want the 2 spaces, they can remove them! It has no impact on the performance of my command line either way. Si...

TUTORIAL: File Sorting on the Raspberry Pi

INTRODUCTION: Whether you're a secretary or a scientist, the ability to sort files is about as fundamental as it gets in the world of computing. The problem with this "obscure but fundamental" topic is that the way computers sort files by name is COMPLETELY MESSED UP! You will not find a truly univ...

Re: STICKY: TUTORIAL: Update NOOBS without Re-Installing It (When Your Raspberry Pi 3B+ Will Not Boot!)

Hi Mike Many thanks for posting this, a great tutorial I was very worried about having to port to the 3B+ due to the extensive changes I have made to a Jessie system! A few minor tweaks to my own environment in addition to your flow described - and I now have this working successfully on a Pi3B+ ma...

Update NOOBS – Quick Version for Experts

ARE YOU AN EXPERT? DO YOU WANT THE QUICK VERSION OF MY TUTORIAL? Expertise, of course, is a relative concept. For example, if you have a PhD in computer science – but you just got your very first Raspberry two hours ago – you are definitely NOT a Raspberry expert! So ask yourself if you meet these ...

Re: STICKY: TUTORIAL: Update NOOBS without Re-Installing It (When Your Raspberry Pi 3B+ Will Not Boot!)

UPDATE: Some people have developed Jessie-dependent code and programs and are therefore wedded to that now-retired operating system – yet they would still like to use the latest and fastest hardware. As a result, the Raspberry Pi Foundation asked me if I could expand this tutorial to support NOOBS-...

Re: SOLVED: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ Will Not Boot!

Which means you [jigneshkerai89] are probably running Raspbian Jessie (not recommended for the new 3B+). Using rpi-update will seem to fix Jessie, but do note that rpi-update installs testing firmware that may have bugs and stability issues. My thoughts exactly. I wanted to point out, however, that...

STICKY: TUTORIAL: Update NOOBS without Re-Installing It (When Your Raspberry Pi 3B+ Will Not Boot!)

INTRODUCTION: I was the first person to fully document (and solve) a major problem with the brand-new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. The problem is quite dramatic – the 3B+ is TOTALLY UNBOOTABLE with all versions of NOOBS older than March 14, 2018. Here's my original post on this topic, which I published...

Re: SOLVED: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ Will Not Boot!

Note to DougieLawson: I give you quarter-credit for your answer on how to update NOOBS. The "instructions" you recommend at The Pi Hut might point an advanced user in the right direction, but it's woefully incomplete and just plain wrong in several critical ways. Here's why: 1: Raspbian, by default...

Re: SOLVED: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ Will Not Boot!

This is exactly why NOOBS should be done away with. In the early days of the Pi it did have its place, but now it just causes more problems than it solves. Stop using NOOBS and start using Raspbian images. They are actually easier to install than NOOBS now (using Etcher ), and they can be easily up...

Re: SOLVED: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ Will Not Boot!

The RPF folks have already fixed it. Use NOOBS 2.7 or NOOBS lite 2.7 and it just works. You may be able to copy stuff from NOOBS Lite 2.7 to the unbootable card. The RPF folks won't do that for you. Where do I even begin Dougie? As I clearly explained in my original post, there was no mention of an...

Re: SOLVED: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ Will Not Boot!

One problem with NOOBS is that apt doesn't upgrade the NOOBS system as well as Raspbian. You need to do some awkward dance steps to update NOOBS as well. Your Raspbian is most certainly fine, but it needs to boot into NOOBS first, then reboot into Raspbian and it is NOOBS that is failing. I'm afrai...

SOLVED: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ Will Not Boot!

I carefully read the official Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ announcement – and all 450+ comments at the time of this writing. A brilliant and comprehensive tutorial! As far as I can tell ffmpeg and mpv are installed and working. I've tested mpv from the terminal on AVI and MP4 files and also youtube videos. I've also created an MP4 video from a series of PNG images using ffmpeg which also plays correctly using mpv RPi_Mik...

However, customizing Terminal is broadly useful for many applications, which is why I'm posting this in the general discussion. Raspbian's default Term...
