Re: Ubuntu Mate 18.04???

I don't know if Ubuntu Mate 18.04 is available for the Pi or if the project is "dead" as some post think but... It sure looks like I have it running on one of my Pi 3B+ machines. I made a backup image of the SD card just in case and then ran sudo do-release-update. After a couple or 3 hours (thought...

Re: Ubuntu Mate 18.04???

No problem MaxVMH. The torrent was still downloading - now canceled.

Thanks for the links DirkS. That is the same sort of dismal stuff I have been seeing.

Re: Ubuntu Mate 18.04???

Thanks MaxVMH,

I trust that as you have a USB image these images are suitable for the 3B+ ? I am pulling the torrent now for the SD card and will give it a try.

Thanks again,

Ubuntu Mate 18.04???

Please pardon me if this is the wrong place to ask this question. I have been looking around various forums and have not come across an answer... Does anyone have any idea when Ubuntu Mate 18.04 will be available for the Pi? I have three Pi computers running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 (1 3B and 2 3B+). 16.04...

Lock screen on headless Pi - Ubuntu Mate

I am running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 on a Pi 3B+. Well. two of them to be correct. On the Pi with a monitor connected I have the screen saver set to lock the screen after 10 minutes. Works. I also have the Lock Screen launcher on the panel. Works. On a similarly configured headless Pi I am running vnc4ser...

I forgot to add... The rpi-update is a one time workaround to get the Ubuntu image to a point where it will boot the 3B+

Re: Pi 3B+ cannot sync time to Internet; ntp service will not run

Thanks scruss, I have been using Linux for quite a while. ntpd has always been there and I rarely had to deal with it. It seems the RHEL 7/CentOS 7 replaced the faithful ntpd with chrony. That is in fact running on my CentOS 7 machines (most of my machines). On Ubuntu... it appears to be systemd-tim...

Re: Is the UK Pi3B+ made by Lucas Electric?

Thanks HawaiianPi, I am using the standard Adafruit plastic case: https://www.adafruit.com/product/2258 I have run it with the cover removed. It still "feels" a bit hotter than the 3B - which I understand is to be expected. I have heat sinks on the CPU and the chip adjacent to the NIC and USB connec...

Re: Pi 3B+ cannot sync time to Internet; ntp service will not run

And it gets better... Now that the thing is working as expected - keeping time with the Internet - I decided to do some testing. I switched date/time to manual and set the clock back 10 minutes. It would not do so. I unplugged the Ethernet cable and the time reverted to my manually set value. I plug...

Re: Pi 3B+ cannot sync time to Internet; ntp service will not run

If at first... start over. I reimaged the microSD card, booted in the older Pi 3B, did the sudo BRANCH=stable rpi-update trick and transferred the card to the new 3B+. I set the date and time and installed a boat load of updates. At least now the date did not revert to 2016 after a reboot. I set dat...

Re: Is the UK Pi3B+ made by Lucas Electric?

Please allow me to post a mea culpa. I was so excited when I received my new 3B+ that I looked at the box from my original 3B - which was made in China. I do not have the box from the first 3B+. I got out my magnifying glass and observed on the first 3B+ the magic words "Made in UK." They are both r...

Pi 3B+ cannot sync time to Internet; ntp service will not run

I am not sure that the two issues are related but I suspect they are. I have a new Pi 3B+ which thinks it is February 2016 - when running Ubuntu Mate 16.04. I built this by installing Ubuntu Mate 16.04 on a Pi 3B then running sudo BRANCH=stable rpi-update I did this on my other Pi 3B+ and it seems t...

Re: Is the UK Pi3B+ made by Lucas Electric?

Thanks jamesh, Not a big deal. It just surprised me that the whole box was hot when I picked it up. The two headless Pi's are barely warm to the touch. As I mentioned they are not running a gui except for the vnc session on the 3B+. I set the new one to command line and pulled the monitor cable. It ...

Re: Is the UK Pi3B+ made by Lucas Electric?

Thank you! Some very interesting reading. Just kidding about Lucas :D Here is what I can update about my situation... The rubber feet raise the case a couple of mm off the table. This perhaps allows a little better air flow. My first two Pi's are on feet. The first two are also running headless. The...

Is the UK Pi3B+ made by Lucas Electric?

Sorry for the subject line - I have owned several MG sports cars  Today I received my third Pi, second 3B+ from Adafruit.com. A great company to deal with by the way. The package says "Made in United Kingdom" which is cool (my prior 3B+ was made in China) but the Pi is not. It runs HOT! I a...

Re: Changing the MAC address on a Pi 3B+

From my reading of RFC2131 I do not think it is supposed to give it back. Anyhow, I have my concern resolved. I originally needed to get rid of the Internet address many years ago when someone assigned my address to their print server. My router was getting flooded by CUPS traffic until I zapped the...

Re: Changing the MAC address on a Pi 3B+

When all else fails... Ubuntu 18.04 has an updated version of nm-applet which allows the MAC address to be automatically changed to a random value - at least on the Intel version of the distribution. I guess I will have to wait until the Pi version comes out and see if the same is true. I checked Ra...

Re: Changing the MAC address on a Pi 3B+

Thanks Steve S. I have seen that approach although I have not tried it. It would require that I manually "make up" the spoofed MAC and enter it in the file... I could write a program to do that but... this is simply a workaround because of the ISP's screwed up dhcp server which will not even respect...

Changing the MAC address on a Pi 3B+

I am running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 on a Pi 3B+ which I installed per Tolentino_Cotesta's workaround shown in this thread https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/ubuntu-mate-for-raspberry-pi-3-model-b/15867/4 Seems to work fine. I had put the Pi in place of my CentOS 7 server which was functioning as a router/fi...

Re: What was your first computer?

The first computer I used was an RCA Spectra 70 in college. Fortran 4 on punched cards. The first microcomputer, back in college after a stint in the Navy, was a Heathkit H8 - eventually with 3 floppy drives and it actually booted itself without keying in the boot instructions - CP/M 2.2. The first ...

Thanks BlackKnight_UK , I currently have what appears to be a full screen of Vivaldi. If I double click on the title bar of the Vivaldi window it changes ever so slightly. I have no idea how I achieved this. I think I stretched the window so it filled essentially the whole display. The current issue...

Vivaldi browser - how to start MAXIMIXED?

I am running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 on my Pi 3. It works well. Quite amazing. As Firefox will not work I first replaced it with the Chromium browser and then with Vivaldi. Vivaldi 1.13.1008.40-1 works OK now that I have added a swap file. The issue I have is that when I launch Vivaldi it opens in a windo...

Custom launcher on Panel or Menu?

Raspbian Stretch does not have a "lock screen" applet which I can add to the panel. (At least I have not found one.) After some research I found and installed the xsceensaver package. "xscreensaver-command -lock" will do what I desire. I added it to the main menu and can invoke it from the menu. How...
