At first, I think, the design of a board with buffered GPIO (with translation to 3,3V or 5V) and a prototyping zone will be of great interest as it opens many possibilities.

Put a powered USB hub on the 5v line as a load! If you need a load then it might as well be useful!
A hub is a too light load for an ATX power to work correctly. The minimum load should be 1A or more

I had a eeePC 701 a few years ago. The flash disk had 2 partitions. One write protected hosting the system and the second one in Read/Write mode. Using unionfs the 2 partitions were merged. So when the system was garbaged a wipe of the second partition gave back a clean system ready to restart.
