Re: Debian on Pi 3B & 3B+

They are Cd/DVD ISO debian-installer images so you don't set them up like a standard pi sd card image. Have a look at the mini ISO images I made for raspbian - https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=195162 , or you could boot the iso using uboot/grub (like I showed in the Ubuntu thread)....

Re: Ubuntu image for the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+

The default Gpu acceleration in raspbian is not standard. Chromium in raspbian has been patched so it should have acceleration. If you switch to the vc4 driver, I think you will lose chromium acceleration in raspbian, but gain it in Firefox/chromium in *Ubuntu(mate). Ubuntu-mate has a precompiled pa...

Re: Confused by mmc modules

Thanks PhilE that's cleared it up a bit for me.

Output of your command https://pastebin.com/DMXq0ckP

Are there lots of other modules where upstream and downstream differ? (Sorry I've a lot to learn about the pi kernels!)

Confused by mmc modules

Using the latest Ubuntu raspi2 kernel I'm getting an error in my dmseg. I'm guessing it is to do with the mmc modules. I've picked out the mmc bits of the dmesg: [ 3.775213] sdhci: Secure Digital Host Controller Interface driver [ 3.778422] sdhci: Copyright(c) Pierre Ossman [ 3.781879] mmc-bcm2835 3...

Re: Ubuntu image for the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+

I was able to make a bootable USB image of Ubuntu Mate for the Raspberry Pi 3B & 3B+. Thanks to everyone who participated in this thread :) I made torrents of the images: This one is for USB drives (I tested this one myself) This one is for SD cards (I couldn't test this one since I don't have a fr...

Re: Ubuntu image for the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+

You said it would take between one and two months. It took about a week to get a working Ubuntu. So that's how long it takes. That is precisely not what I said. The fix for this was outlined on page 1. Throughout this thread I've been the one encouraging people that they can fix this for themselves...

Re: Ubuntu image for the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+

Unless you have insider information, it is not going to be a week. Probably somewhere between one and two months for Ubuntu-mate. For Ubuntu-server it is even longer. 18.04 is in feature freeze I think, so the bootloader files probably won't be updated in time for release. Plus there will probably ...

Re: Ubuntu image for the Raspberry Pi 3 B not booting via USB

So changing PI_BOOT/cmdline.txt and PI_ROOT/etc/fstab to use sda2 and sda1/sda2 did not work. Just getting the four raspberries and a blinking green drive light. When I swap out the entire PI_BOOT files with those of the Raspbian image boot, the system will boot but fail later on. This makes me thi...

Re: Ubuntu image for the Raspberry Pi 3 B not booting via USB

I had changed the PI_BOOT/cmdline.txt to have a "root=/dev/sda2". I definitely did not change the PI_ROOT/etc/fstab file. I tried fstab as this with no luck: proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/sda2 / ext4 defaults,noatime 0 1 /dev/sda2 /boot/ vfat defaults 0 2 Should the ext4 partition(PI_ROOT) be s...

Re: Ubuntu image for the Raspberry Pi 3 B not booting via USB

I'm not sure why this got moved, but I answered it where you originally posted it - viewtopic.php?f=63&t=208538&start=75

I would use /dev/sda when first trying to get it to boot, but it is probably a good idea to switch to uuid once you have it booting.

Re: Ubuntu image for the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+

I've seen a few people try USB booting in Ubuntu-mate and you are not the first to fail at this. For USB booting you need to update the bootloader and edit cmdline.txt (like you've done). In addition you need to edit /etc/fstab. I haven't done this myself, but in theory that should be enough to get ...

Re: Ubuntu image for the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+

Well done BluPI2 and washy. So not a waste of time after all! I'm sure a lot of people will be grateful for the effort you've both put in. You'll want to update and upgrade the packages: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade This will sort out anything that is missing or needs updating (like...

Re: Ubuntu image for the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+

In reply to a comment above, that booting a Pi is real hard, I'd have to say that booting a Pi with the official OS is really easy. Image SD card, boot. It really is that simple. Booting the Pi with third party OS is almost always just as easy, except when a new model comes out and the third partie...

Re: Ubuntu image for the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+

For anyone taking up aerdengizv's or washy's mantle, the bootloader files you need to update are bootcode.bin, fixup.dat, start.elf and bcm2710-rpi-3-b-plus.dtb If you hit a black screen like washy, then possibly you can play around with the xorg driver used. Delete this file /usr/share/X11/xorg.con...

It's ages since I've used Ubuntu-mate, but it think you should boot into a screen where you enter user details, rather than a GUI. Can anyone confirm? What is the contents of the cmdline.txt in Ubuntu-mate before you make any changes?

I think I remember being confused by the same thing. I'm guessing the last bit is just part of the package version number, rather than for the pi 1, 3. The rpi2 kernel would not work on the pi 1.

I've been using the raspbian-ua-netinst headless network installer for Raspbian for a few years, and I'd like to work on upgrading it to Stretch (and support for the 3B+, two of which just arrived). However, I can't seem to make any sense out of the linux-image names in the Raspbian repository, to ...

Please could elaborate how to update these files if I only have access to a x86 Windows machine to create a bootable SD Card. Therefore I could run Ubuntu ARMHF to see what it offers. No because you are purposefully trying to be difficult/are taking the urine. You can update the bootloader/dtb file...
