Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

The webgllib.bbc library has been written primarily to support 3D graphics on the in-browser (Emscripten / Web Assembly) edition of BBC BASIC for SDL 2.0 . Here are some of its features: Substantially compatible with the D3DLIBA (for BB4W), ogllib (for desktop BBCSDL) and gleslib (for mobile BBCSDL)...

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

I have updated the Console Mode editions of BBC BASIC to version 0.28, to fix a couple of bugs: ON ... PROC did not work correctly and could report a Syntax error even with valid code. ON ERROR LOCAL could, in rare circumstances, misbehave if used in a nested function. Version 0.28 may be downloaded...

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

I've released version 1.16a of BBC BASIC for SDL 2.0 - the cross-platform programming language for Windows, MacOS, Linux, Raspbian, Android, iOS and in-browser. This is an interim release to fix a bug and a regression, it affects the 64-bit, ARM and Browser editions only, the 32-bit x86 editions hav...

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

With the portfolio of 'my' versions of BBC BASIC now being quite large I have created this grid showing which version has which capabilities. The boxes marked ? indicate features of which the version is theoretically capable, but I haven't yet attempted an implementation:

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

It is easy for a newb ( like me ) to get confused when terminal commands stop working ...... I'm afraid it's the nature of Linux that the installation process requires you to be more knowledgeable and experienced than when installing on the other OSes supported by BBCSDL. The instructions in instal...

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

I wouldn't have reported it if it weren't a real problem under Raspberry Pi OS. So you say, but you still haven't told me what you want me to change! My existing install-rpi.txt file does install libsdl2-net, as it always has, so I neither understand what the problem is nor how I am supposed to fix...

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

Suggestion for install-rpi.txt : make a folder " foo "" <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< extract bbc-rpi.zip into " foo " <<<<<<<<<<<< So you want install-rpi.txt to contain the instructions for extracting install-rpi.txt...  Anyway I don't like to be that prescriptive. Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

The libSDL2_net library is definitely required: Well, I've never installed it and BBC BASIC works here (RPi 3 and RPi 4). My system doesn't even recognise the underscore variety of the library, only the hyphen one that my install file specifies: sudo apt-get install libsdl2-net-2.0-0 libsdl2-net-2....

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

Richard - you might want to update the installation file, as it's missing the libsdl2-net-2.0-0 requirement. Not according to what I see here it isn't! This is what it says in the install-rpi.txt file: sudo apt-get install libsdl2-2.0-0 sudo apt-get install libsdl2-ttf-2.0-0 sudo apt-get install li...

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

./bbcsdl: symbol lookup error: ./bbcsdl: undefined symbol: SDL_ComposeCustomBlendMode The SDL_ComposeCustomBlendMode function was added in SDL 2.0.6 so if it cannot be found the implication is that the version of SDL installed is even earlier than that. Which model of Raspberry Pi are we talking ab...

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

If you've noticed some Ceefax pages not displaying correctly recently, you're not alone. The BBC has changed the HTML format of some of its news pages and this has broken the parser in Ceefax.bbc . I've now fixed this and updated both BBC BASIC for SDL 2.0 and the standalone Android app , although i...

I have updated the Console Mode editions of BBC BASIC to version 0.26, principally to bring them into line with the latest release of BBC BASIC for SDL 2.0 . emcc -s USE_PTHREADS=1 -s WASM=1 -s USE_SDL=2 -s USE_SDL_TTF=2 -s USE_SDL_NET=2 I went through this whole exercise months ago and built a complete BBC BASIC binary (as an HTML5 file) using Emscripten, but it doesn't run. I'll revisit it sometime when the multi-threaded support is more mature. Reply...

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

If it works in Chrome, why wouldn't it work in Chromium? In the posted screen shot it says "Exception thrown, see Javascript console" so that might answer your question. It could be that Chromium lacks a feature that it relies on, or it could be a lack of resources. It won't even run in Firefox cur...

Here is what I get : That seems to be Chromium. I didn't say it ran in Chromium, and I wouldn't expect it to. Perhaps it was inappropriate to post the message to this forum, as there's no way it could possibly run on a Raspberry Pi anyway. If you want to try it, use (up to date) Microsoft Edge or G...

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

Someone who did their GCSEs in 2012 would be 23-24: more likely to be teaching than learning. 2012 was when that particular curriculum came in (hence the students' book being published) so schools were teaching BBC BASIC for some time afterwards. My records of sales of BBC BASIC for Windows to scho...

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

BASIC's just for nostalgic olds like us. It's perhaps worth noting, again, that as recently as 2012 an entire chapter was devoted to BBC BASIC in the OCR Computing for GCSE students' book, and there were UK schoolkids being taught it in the classroom up to about 5 years ago. So there will be plenty...

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

If anybody wants to try porting my BBC BASIC to the Micro:Bit the source code is readily available at GitHub . It's very much designed to keep the generic interpreter (bbmain.c, bbexec.c, bbeval.c) and the platform-specific modules (bbcmos.c, bbccli.c, bbcvdu.c etc.) separate, in keeping with the wa...

Re: Introduction to BBC BASIC

Is there a version of BBCBasic for the Micro:Bit ? Not that I am aware of. Does it even have the input/output capability to make such a thing sensible (could PRINT "Hello world!" do anything useful?). I could imagine some sort of cut-down version of the language adapted to its capabilities, but it ...

Absolutely, and naturally I have no problem with Michael improving the compatibility of Matrix Brandy with my BASICs. We are rather different in our approaches to software development: I prefer to be slow and carefu...
