I managed to fix both issues. There is a different network manager to select from the panel applets, and that one shows up and works. I fixed the bluetooth applet using

Thanks. Yes, I made a backup of my Jessie image before updating it, so I can easily go back if need be. But FWIW, I have several Raspbian Jessie systems, and I regularly update them and get lots of updates, so clearly someone is still maintaining Jessie.

If they were end-of-life, it wouldn't have been possible to do the upgrade. Jessie is not EOL (i.e. no more security updates) until June 2020. Stretch is not EOL until June 2022.

Starting a new system from scratch is a pain, as there's just too much stuff to set up all over again.

I agree that the comments in the example above are pointless, but having them intermingled with code can be very helpful (just like parenthetical remarks in English prose) to understanding the code.

The touch knows nothing about a changed Screen Resolution. It's still useable with a pen, but not very accurate in case of small touch Icons. Nevertheless, OS Buttons are still useable. Would it be possible to unsolder pins 4 and 5 of U1, lift up that side of U1 (perhaps while heating pins 1, 2, and 3), and then connect pins 4 and 5 to their correct pads using fine wire?

I think it boils down to: Writing clean code isn't hard; cleaning dirty code is.

BTW, the project I've been working on during the course of my career was originally written in B, then ported to C shortly before I came along (but still looked very B-like), and has recently been made C++ compliant.
