It is a very open computer. It has a full suite of software, either with the initial install or capabel of being added later, and all of it is free . A small correction, most of the software is free, certainly enough for your son to have a perfectly viable working computer, but there are exceptions...

Another thing to consider is the validity of your SD card, many fakes are available (8Gb cards reputed to be 32Gb cards etc). Did you buy it from a reputable supplier?

Not a good idea, back feeding power via a hub could cause issues, use a proper PSU or a powerbank and leave the hub to worry about the devices connected to it.

After saying that, you don't mention which model of Pi you have.

FWIW I bought a 1800MaH power bank for £10 from the corner store, primarily planned to power a zero (a lot less power requirements) but it should be capable of powering your Pi3 for an hour or so.

I'm under the impression that Pi's have now been streamlined down to just a couple of models and I thought maybe that would mean it was easier to get them now, I take it demand is still high? Is it safe to power a zero from a Pi 3B, I'm using an official 2.5 amp 5V supply for the 3 and other than HDMI WiFi Keyboard and mouse nothing else is connected, The Zero will have nothing at all connected. I'm just trying to save a wallwart.

I stand corrected, I posted merely on my own experience which involves several VGA monitors with a singlen HDMI->VGA convertor and a couple of HDMI TV's and have never had to edit config files. However, as you suggest others experience may vary. I still suspect the adaptor though

II read it somewhere that if you are using a VGA monitor then you need to edit that file You read false information, I switch my Pi's regularly between HDMI TV's and VGA monitors (via convertor) without having to change any settings.
