Done! Solved my own problem, but posting here if it helps someone. desoldered the red wire, and soldered it directly to the Vo of the AMS1117 regulator. Hi, I got the display working (well, kinda) - Display flickers on and goes dark ... so it is unusable./ I think the voltage supplied by 5 v pin is not enough even if the regulator 1117 says 3.3 on it.
