Re: How to block a domain name?

The problem I'm having is that I can block pinging apple, but I'm unable to block apple.com and apple updates. Apple inc owns public IP blocks, and for what I’ve seen always sticks to the same block for push notification etc. Block these addresses incoming and outgoing and you should get what you w...

Re: Moving file system to NFS share - not working - nfs server not responding

I think this is a problem for Synology more than Pi.
This: https://superuser.com/questions/860553/ ... nology-nas
says their NFS server defaults to version 4.
Try specifying ",vers=3" to your boot options. Maybe ",vers=3,nolock", who knows?

I am not a Synology user, sorry.

Re: Why not add ubuntu core in the forum?

As you see your question doesn't elicit much responses, so I would say that is a good reason. IMHO, ubuntu core (aka snappy, snappy core, ??) has some merits, but the business model behind it less so. Being on the public Snappy store is helping Ubuntu gain revenue (which can be fair considering they...

Re: New Kernel Build for Raspberry Pi 3 b+ - Boot Problem

So you copied kernel and stuff to the FAT partition, right? Where did you put the generated lib directory? At boot, your kernel will look for modules in /lib/modules/<kernel_version-arch>/ on the root filesystem designated in cmdline.txt. <kernel_version-arch> has to match the running kernel. In oth...

Thank you for explaining the different levels to me. I think I don't care if they know I'm present on the network so long as they can't change or snoop into my pi.
That's the spirit. Because if you don't share your MAC, you're not on the (local) network at all ;)
Cheers.

See the wikipedia page on short-circuit evaluation for examples and details.

(And don't play too much with short-circuit evaluation... Statements become quickly hard to read, and mistakes can be costly. The good old if-then-else-fi is easier to read.)

The linux Desktop has been "ready" then "mature" for decades... It is what it is.
Is that with Chrome/FF or some built-in browser? (Pure curiosity, I don't use the Linux Desktop except Ubuntu, and under extreme duress only)

Re: how to copy 1 external SD to another external SD?

Nobody will I'm afraid, Stretch is no longer current. Buster is.

You can make a copy of an SD from the command-line, from a PC or MAC or Linux machine using various programs or the command-line.
If you can't make your initial plan work, I suggest you examine some of these alternatives.

Re: how to always mount USB drives in same location

You could create a udev rule that triggers every time it sees a usb drive, and runs a script that smartly (testing required, there...) creates a symlink in /dev or possibly a mount, if the symlink/mount doesn't exist yet. Statically mounting creates the issue of unmounting *before* the device is rem...

Did you ever try

Code: Select all

as it seems you needed "-o nolock" when mounting manually?

Re: docker.service failed on pi 3

The kernel does not seem up to the task. Docker cannot load many modules, including quite common ones.
How did you install that machine? Can you reinstall from an official image?
If you look around the forum here there are people installing Docker on Buster without particular difficulty it seems.

Roll back to the system that worked on this Pi, not to a never tested one. If that one fails, and you swapped PSU, SD and all accessories, then I think the conclusion would be that for some reason a hardware fault developed... The OOM killer is a feature of the kernel, to keep the system alive it sl...

Well then I suppose the GUI tool you’re using has an option to save an SD as an image on the file system.
Plug your SD, save as file, unplug, plug the other one, restore from file to the SD.
Do not confuse which is which before proceeding...

Buster has switched to openresolv (interfacing w/ systemd-resolved) instead of resolvconf previously used in Stretch.
I am quite fuzzy about the ramifications of the change but I've already seen a few funny things happen...
