I purchased a pack of 300 M3 nylon bits from ebay for about $3 including postage. M2.5 appears to be twice the price or more.

There are many posts on recycling laptops. Perhaps there could be a sticky thread listing the laptops by brand and model with a link to the thread for each.

Brasero can create an image file from a DVD and VLC can play the image file. Are the latest versions of each available on the Pi?

Metal cases are good for heat transfer. Metal cases require external antenna. Has anyone used the previous case with an external antenna? Does the new case have the same hole? What parts do you need?

The Pi has M2.5 holes. The most common size in hobby kits appears to be M3. My Pi now has M3 holes with the help of a 3mm drill bit turned by hand.

Re: How long to encrypt USB drive?

Encryption means writing. Low cost flash memory is very slow at writes and the time depends on memory size. Some encryption software can use the GPU for speed while other software does everything in software. Can you display CPU usage?

Somebody on your network runs a backup and swamps a server/router/ethernet. One of our two local 4G networks is swamped in the afternoon when kids leave school and go online.

Re: Feasibility for home usage: as a FTP Server, PLEX etc

Most of those uses are covered in other posts. Google search will find them and is better than the forum search. The Pi USB 2 speed will limit usage. Using a separate Pi for each task will help keep them fast. After developing a server on a Pi 3, you may be able to transfer it to a Pi Zero W instead...

OpenWRT is an open source router project giving you pre configured software. OpenWRT works on some models of Pi but not all. OpenWRT also works on cheap routers that give you better Wifi coverage plus some handle 4G USB dongles. There are a few posts on this topic. I use a cheap TP-Link router that ...

Looking like a "fool" is good. It gets you sympathy. :D A good microSD card has fast reads and really slow writes. You have to pay a lot of money to get fast writes. There are posts on setting the microSD card to read only. In effect, you load the OS from the card and keep the magnetic disk for writ...

I saved a few computers from water. If salt spray, it has to be fast and rinse with clean water. Unplug everything and wipe with a tea towel as they are absorbent and lint free. Hair dryer next on medium setting. Rice is a good absorber for small tasks. Airconditioning set to dehumidify helps dry ou...

Any old hub? No, a common complaint about many hubs is that they drop the voltage when you draw full power. Can you test the hub in the shop? Post the model here to see if anyone else has used it. Ask friends for their hubs and test. I use a 4 amp USB 3 hub because USB 3 is designed to supply more p...

Go, Rust, any new compiled languages available on the Pi?

C is too slow to write. Python is too slow to execute. Java is both. There are several new languages developed for both speed of development and speed of execution. You can connect as many disks as fits your powered USB hubs. They can be allocated as /home/me/video, /home/me/recording, etc. You can use a disk ID to give them a permanent connection, making them appear at the same point in the file system every time they mount.

You cannot encrypt the Ext4 partition because the boot code in the FAT partition can not read an encrypted partition. You would have to split the Ext4 partition in two, one for the operating system and one for your encrypted data. Big computers have encryption at the disk level because they have meg...

Most VNC software creates a new session for VNC. The VNC server side desktop session is different to the desktop session. To get the same session, use x11vnc as the server.
