xfce?

Hi,

I read somewhere that xfce is meant to be light and fast. Is it?
I have the standard Raspbian installation for Raspberry Pi (3). Is it like switching a skin, if I want to try xfce?

Re: Crontab

I know about Mac, it was a comparison ;-)

Of course I don't HAVE to run maintenance tasks, but which ones are useful or necessary? For example: updating the search database daily seems useful to me. Or cleaning some caches and logs.
Which others are important? How do I add them?

Crontab

More questions...

I know Mac OS does some Linux-like task when you don't shut it down at night. There are daily and weekly maintenance tasks performed regularly or at night.
I have "Scheduled Tasks" installed, but how and which tasks are important to set up?

Bluetooth

Hi, Today I started testing the Bluetooth functionality of my Raspberry Pi 3. I installed the obvious-looking packages for Bluetooth connectivity and management. My phone (a FairPhone, you should look it up, very interesting project) was recognized, although pairing didn't succeed for the moment. My...

If it's only web-based, I can continue using DropBox in web-way, no?

DropBox

Hello again Raspbarians, I tried installing the Debian package and the command line way from the DropBox website. Neither succeeded. Is there a way or a good alternative? I checked OwnCloud, but stopped after I had to sign up with a second company. Maybe I didn't need to get scared away :-). BitTorr...

Folders open with Audacious

Hello, Since I used Audacious one time, when I select a folder from the Launch Bar with the Foldermenu, Audacious opens. When I open a folder from my desktop, it opens as it should, as a folder. Where can I change this error? Thank you (Also: i installed the Debian FAQ from the software center, but ...

Re: Launch Bar

Thanks JimmyN! I found the Application Launch Bar, but because it first appears as a "+" sign, I didn't know that was the one I'm looking for.
Strange detail: I installed Iceweasel and it's in my menu, but not in the list where you can add it in the application launch bar.

Launch Bar

Hi again,

Accidently, I removed the programs from my Launch Bar. How can I add programs? Right clicking gives me some settings, but I didn't find a way to add programs.

Which would be a good manual to search such things myself?

Regards,

Jonathan

Re: What to expect (how powerful is the Raspberry?)

Unless the Game has been explicitly tailored/ported to/optimized for the Pi , always use package managment (APT , "Software Center") to get software which has a chance of actually working on the Pi.s OK. I do that. Armagetron is from the sofware-center. As is Brutal Chess, what also doesn't run lik...

Gimp and Inkscape :-) But also Mixxx.
I installed them, but hadn't the time to test them. Because the Tron-game ran so slow, I was getting worried :-).

What to expect (how powerful is the Raspberry?)

Hi again, I know the Raspberry Pi is no PowerBook, but what can I expect in terms of programs I can run? I noticed mixcloud.com (not a program, I know) loads very slow, but Facebook works fine (which is slow on my smartphone). I tried the game Armagetron , but that didn't work. So, I guess using Gim...

Re: Program Files in Raspbarian

Thanks! I know most of the software can be found and installed through Menu > Preferences > Add/Remove software. But I didn't find Dropbox there, so I downloaded the Debian version from their site. After installation didn't succeed, I tried the command-line described there as well. That didn't work ...

Re: Program Files in Raspbarian

Thank you. Somehow, the IRC programs just don't install. I get no error message, but I can't find them. I tried Pidgin and Kopete (and some of which I forgot the name). I restarted, for you never know. The "search" doesn't search very good. I tried to install Dropbox and that file is in my Downloads...

Program Files in Raspbarian

Hi, I just received my first Pi and I'm happy :-). I'm using it as desktop computer to start. I'm used to MacOS. I'm installing some programs, and since I didn't find Processing in the installation screen, I downloaded it from their website. What would be the correct folder to keep this Processing p...
