Re: Config sense hat in payload doc:

Is there a 'good time' to seek advice via freenode? I am on just now and the room seems empty. Perhaps after 5pm?

Config sense hat in payload doc:

Folks, at the end of the configuration process for setting up a payload document the PITS manual states 'we describe how to add fields for extra sensors in the section about configuring those sensors'. I have a sense hat in my setup but I cannot locate the section referred to. Has anybody included a...

DL-FLdigi not decoding audio signal

Dear HABbers, we have a strong audio signal in SDR sharp with two distinct peaks. Having tuned dl-fldigi so that the two lines are aligned with the incoming signal we are getting no text incoming on the green display pane i.e. no data (green or red). The manual indicates checking the I and Q swappin...

Folks, having read through some of the advice regarding taking pics in near space ( https://balloonchallenge.org/HABPhotographyHow-to-1.pdf and http://www.daveakerman.com/ ) I have bought a Nikon Coolpix A10 (16MP / USB / 5x zoom / 160g / image stab.) Some of the boys in our science club were hell b...

Re: Aerial issues:

One more thing..... the Pits manual has a section on Radio's and scanners but doesn't really elaborate on the difference between dongles and these more expensive bits of kit. We purchased the rather more pricey Funcube dongle pro +. I had envisaged that we would use this in the school with a station...

Re: Aerial issues:

Loads of great radio advice there! thanks...... In terms of making radios I think that would be the ideal learning situation. In this case however, we are going for expedience since we have been doing this for a while and have had to weather many delays....many simply caused by purchasing red tape! ...

Ha....yes - I nearly had that very conversation but the sales rep jumped right in and told me where the m3 spec data was. Might be a bit better if it wasn't in the 'small print'.

thanks again!!!

Helium gas issues

Folks, I am trawling the internet looking for Helium gas suppliers. I work in a school so cost is an issue although we have about £300 et aside for 'launch' consumables. BOC supply 5.19m3 for in 'Genie' 20L cylinder for £218.23 (vat inc.) + delivery £63.06 (vat.inc) http://www.boconline.co.uk/en/pro...

Re: from SDR to fldigi?

thanks for the help Dave. It seems I must have overlooked something when setting up the serial ports. I did follow the instructions as laid out in the pits manual but it seems a refresh of the Pi's operating system fixed the issue.

Aerial issues:

Ok - our little school HAB club has managed to successfully decode a signal across the classroom. The boys took the kit out at the weekend and discovered the range (without an antennae) was around 10m. We have a HAB preamp and will hook that up as soon as the adapter arrives to couple it to our Func...

Re: from SDR to fldigi?

a quick question - I have joined the highaltitude channel and have types a hello in the text box. Where do these messages go? I cannot see my own text appearing anywhere? The help files appear blocked by the school. I assume people will either be logged on (live) or will reply later. Is the list dow...

Re: from SDR to fldigi?

OK, I'm in - I was having trouble getting around the schools 'zero tolerance' web filter but it seems to be ignoring my little Eee Pc for some reason. Our balloon club runs today so I will task the boys with making use of this facility to send some screen shots.

Are you aware of any teachers launching their balloons using H2? There would be significant health and safety implications for this I would imagine. Does anyone know of any techers who have done this and if so, how they managed the risk?

ta,

Re: from SDR to fldigi?

We followed the instructions on how to coinfigure the serial ports from the latest Pits manual (includes Pi zero stuff) and that seemed to have no effect. we still get two quite small peaks that are separated by a reasonable amount. I am wondering if the aerial supplied with the Pits board is the wr...

Re: Avoiding 'splash' down!

that flight time looks like an error...sorry! Today's simulation with the HABHAB burst predictor used 7.3 m/s ascent rate using a K1200 balloon with a 650g payload. This requires approx. 4.4m3 of He and bursts after 72 min at ~31km. Putting these parameters into the landing calculator created a tota...

Re: from SDR to fldigi?

Ok - I have increased the signal strength by plugging a quarter length piece of single co-axial wire into the funcube dongle. This basic aerial has boosted the signal but the same basic format of peaks still exists (as you would expect). I am assuming that I have missed a setting somewhere.

from SDR to fldigi?

folks, I am at the stage of trying to pipe my audio signal from the SDR software to the dl-fldigi software for decoding: I have managed to receive an audio signal from my PiTS board on the SDR package but I am having trouble isolating the 'double peak' mentioned in the Pits manual. Instead I have a ...

Avoiding 'splash' down!

We have a payload weight (650g) and have roughed out some launch parameters based on using 4.5m3 of Helium with a 24" parachute. With a target ascent rate of 7.3 m/s and a decent of 7m/s we end up with a total flight time of around 240mins. Early simulations had us landing NE of our launch site (som...

Ok - we have actually connected the Pi to the sense hat and then to a touchscreen (it fits in the case). Not sure why my pupil did that - he likes mucking about! Everything powers up and the joystick can be used to navigate etc. Now to get the sensors giving us some data..... I think the initial ide...

connecting sense hat

I just received my sense-hat after a long wait due to it being out of stock across all suppliers. The advice for assembling ( http://www.pi-in-the-sky.com/index.php?id=stacking-guide ) indicates using a stacking kit which I have ordered. On closer inspection the images seem to show that the PiTS boa...

Sense hat out of stock till Aug!

Oh dear, our careful crafted schedule (erm!) of releasing a balloon by May/June at the latest has taken a huge knock with the eventual admission from our supplier (RS components) that the sense hat is out of stock until August. Having canvassed several other suppliers it appears there are none to be...

Re: Which Model RPi for HAB

I seem to remember reading a post that stated there were problems using the A+ with the sensehat and Pits board in terms of data communication. I think it was perhaps an issue regarding compiling speeds and/or the rate at which data could be relayed? Sorry for the vagueness.....any idea if using an ...
