Re: Convert NOOBS to disk image

There's a lot I could say about this bit of canon - that is, about the SD formatting tool - but suffice to say that:

Just because something is written down - yes, even if it is written on the raspberrypi.org site - doesn't mean it is true.

What does WiFi have to do with any of this? You'll never get GigaBit performance from WiFi.

fyi the RPi 1B+ & Rpi 2B has significant I/O gains using a USB3 USB Gigabit Ethernet Adapter:

Re: RPI 2 Model B lan / gigabit problems

FWIW - and not particularly related to how this thread has developed, but in regards to the issue PeterO raised - people have noted in the past that although using a GigaBit ethernet device on the Pi won't result in full GigaBit performance (because, as we all know, the USB 2.0 is limited to 480Mb m...

Wouldn't Linux be a lot more like what you are used to?

Re: Where to begin

Do you remember when Windows ran on top of DOS? Linux is a command line system and the graphics run on top. You'd better get your bullet-proof vest on. :) I suppose people will nitpick, but it is true (that the graphics run on top in Linux). But it is also (still) true in Windows. MS tries to prete...

Re: Convert NOOBS to disk image

Dougie's question is valid - I am not sure how experienced users would benefit by using NOOBS, apart from the ease of install (and I am not sure about that).
If you (still) think this, then you just haven't thought it through.

Don't feel bad, though. You're not alone.

Re: Windows 7 won't read a NTFS partition created by a Raspb

I think this falls under the heading of:

Windows does not recognize any partitions beyond the first one on removable media.

So, you need to make sure that the Windows partition is the first one.

Re: Reformatting hard drive

If you really want to do this (and lots of people here will, any minute now, be either sarcastically asking you why you want to do it and/or telling you you don't want to do it), then the easiest way to do it is on your Windows machine. I'm pretty sure it can be done on Linux, using the appropriate ...

Yes, I was just thinking about that (almost as if by telepathy).

That, as you say, it could all be done without using an SD card at all, using loop files and such.

Re: Convert NOOBS to disk image

I'm assuming that OP is *not* a beginner and that he wants to do something interesting and fun (and, not incidentally, useful to *him* - if no one else). So, in the grand Unix tradition, the answer is "Well, *you* could do that..." If *I* were doing this, these are the steps I would follow: Download...

Re: Windows remote desktop

RDP does support sound. From the Wiki page:

Audio Redirection allows users to process audio on a remote desktop and have the sound redirected to their local computer.

It is possible (probable) that the Unix/Linux implementations of this Windows-centric protocol choose not to deal with audio.

With the colour issues. I wonder if you have an issue with your soldering. P.S. I haven't got one of these, but I believe these adapters for sale on the Deal Extreme website are a copy of the VGA666 adapter and don't require assembly. About using VGA and HDMI at the same time, the answer is you can...

Re: Cant get autostart to work

Autolaunch worked for root because: sudo nano ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE/autostart is editing the file for root's profile. No. Try: sudo echo ~ And then you will know who expands the ~ (and when). Do the same edit as your regular, non-root account and leave out sudo. This is correct advice, though. P...

For the umpteemillionth time, the right way to get up and running on the Pi is: 1) Download NOOBS Lite (*not* the full, heavy NOOBS, and certainly not the Raspbian "raw image") 2) On your Windows PC, with a freshly formatted SD card in the card reader/writer, at, say, J:, open up a Command Prompt an...

Re: Files and Transfers

Your basic approach and assumptions are wrong. What you need to do is to initiate it from the Windows side. This is true because, unless special measures are taken, there is no 'ssh' server running on your Windows machine. So, you'll need to leverage the fact that there *is* an ssh server running on...
