Re: ArmedSlack working :)

Awesome! It would be great if you could include wget and git in the default root image, so that rpi-update works out-of-the-box :) And after you've tested/uploaded your image ( http://rpi-developers.com might be a good place for hosting? ), please add it to http://elinux.org/RPi_Distributions Wish m...

Re: RasPi power usage measurements ~2 watts at idle

You will need a good hot-air gun I've got a friend with one of those. He used it to fix my PS3 by reflowing the BGAs :D (fixed long enough for me to recover my game-saves at least) I think it could half the power consumption in some cases. The idea is that for battery powered usage even saving 10% ...

Heh, does "single transistor" count as the most minimal version of an "expansion board"?

Re: RasPi power usage measurements ~2 watts at idle

Is the entire heatsink-area under RG2 all soldered? Does that make it extra hard to remove? Or mean I'm more likely to damage other components while trying to remove it?
How big an estimated power-saving would be gained by replacing RG1 and RG2 with more efficient versions?

Re: RasPi power usage measurements ~2 watts at idle

I'd expect a battery (12VDC ?) -> 5V regulator to be much more efficient than a mains (240VAC) -> 5V regulator :)

Re: Mouse and keyboard over GPIO?

If someone's feeling adventurous ;) it should be possible to get something like http://hackaday.com/2008/05/29/how-to-s ... -terminal/ hooked up to the Raspi - obviously you'd need to interface to 3V3 serial though rather than RS232.

Re: RTC Software

I've only ever used 3v3 i2c myself (not on the Raspi yet though), so I'm not claiming to be any kind of expert, but this throws up lots and lots of info: http://www.google.com/search?q=i2c+5v+3v
With the scarcity of Raspis, do you really want to risk frying any of it's GPIO lines? :?

Re: Pi as a webserver

Not directly, no. The RPi's GPIO lines don't supply enough current to drive relays, you'll need to look at one of the expansion boards... :P ;)

I do believe we are seeing the beginning of the future where everyone carries their own computer on a key chain wherever they go. Isn't that kind of what smartphones already do? ;) I'm not a fan of mobile phones myself, but I used to have one of these http://www.trustedreviews.com/OQO-Model-02-Ultr...

Haha, I remember playing this game on the Amiga with my brothers. The levels with the moving floors were always my favourite :D
I did a quick search for a Linux port and found http://www.muppetlabs.com/~breadbox/software/tworld/ - have you tried compiling and running it on the Raspi?

Re: RTC Software

According to http://www.maxim-ic.com/datasheet/index.mvp/id/2688 the DS1307 needs a 5V supply. So you either need a I2C-compatible (i.e. bi-directional) level-converter to interface the 5V i2c of the RTC to the 3.3V i2c of the Rpi, or you could get a RTC that works with a 3.3V supply, e.g. http://ww...

Lots of useful info at http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/FAQ/Spi ... BHarddisks
I think the ability to spin down depends on both the HDD, and the USB<->HDD interface controller.

Re: NFS root - totes worth it

I guess if you're loading the rootfs from NFS, then there's no need for any fancy partitioning setup / dd commands on your SD card, i.e. you could just copy the relevant *.elf, *.bin, *.img and *.txt files to any regular FAT32 SD card? If you modify /etc/fstab to not mount /boot, can you remove the ...

Re: the teething troubles... (not the launch)

No one who's sensible is expecting a super fast piece of kit, but when I remember that my first web browsing experience was on a 486 SX33 with 4Mb RAM, I find it hard to fathom the Pi can't be made to browse the web at a decent speed. Remember watching JPEG images being drawn a single line at a tim...

Scroll to the bottom of http://elinux.org/RPi_xray_wallpapers to get an idea of the large number of pins on the SoC and RAM, and just how tiny they are. AFAIK JamesH has "normal sized" fingers

Re: Pi as a webserver

Do you know if your able to use PHP / python to talk to the GPIO pins? http://pypi.python.org/pypi/RPi.GPIO/ For example hooking up a thermometer and outputting real time temperatures via the web server? AFAIK most temperature sensors output analogue voltages. The Raspi doesn't have any ADCs, so yo...

With the raspite theme, there's no way to differentiate read and unread private messages.
