Re: What media center works best for games?

I use RaspBMC.. I find I can play Crysis in 1080p, but Openelec only lets me play in 720p

Good luck!

Re: non xbmc based system?

I THINK there has been some success getting gstreamer accelerated via openmax. This should give us accelerated video on the commandline and in a GUI.

Otherwise, as above omxplayer works great. A basic menu-based frontend for omxplayer might be a fun project for somebody.

Re: DTS Update

I am guessing you are asking about hardware DTS downmixing to stereo as DTS passthrough works 100% .
I think the focus on this has largely been dropped as 1080p + DTS plays fine in most cases with moderate overclocking.

Re: streaming DVD's through WIFI?

..although this guy isn't asking about playback natively on the Pi that's quite an interesting link.

I am wondering if the /dvd/dvd.mpg can be created in a shared folder and therefore streamed over the LAN. Its worth a shot.

Re: Ambitious media player idea

There is a big difference between having a 1.8ghz desktop system and having 2 pi's "working in parallel". You also need to understand that a ARM chip running "overclocked to 900 MHz" is nothing like as fast as even a 900 Mhz desktop chip. Mhz is not a good measure of performance comparison when you ...

Yes an Ethernet attached wfi router should work fine to share out stuff from your pi.. but as I said your problem is DVD encryption and playback on the tv

Re: streaming DVD's through WIFI?

Connecting a regular settop DVD player to a pi would need some kind of video-in device adding to it and would result in worse quality than the source. A better solution would be to hook to pi up to an external usb hard disk and a usb dvd-rom drive. You can then use the pi to rip your dvd's to the us...

Re: Iplayer from outside UK with own VPN

The easiest way to get your vpn working with all your devices is to do it on your router. I use a router which supports the dd-wrt firmware and this has vpn support built in. This means you would have your uk vpn working for all devices which connect to that router. Try this link if you really want ...

"benefitting only themselves" ??

I'm not sure the average person who would use accelerated X would feel that the developer was only benefitting themselves. Quite the opposite.

Dom fixed an earlier bug where the channel mapping was incorrect when downmixing 5.1 -> 2.0
That now works as intended,

This thread is about the performance issues around DTS downmixing and potentially offloading this to hardware.

Re: Getting TOSLINK audio: status?

Looks like people are starting to have success with USB soundcards.

Is there any support for setups like this in any XBMC releases? Last time I tried it was HDMI or Analog audio using the built-in hardware only.

I would also be very interested in knowing if passthrough is supported.

Re: 1080i AVC (h264) Tv recordings no longer work - Black Sc

I notice that the recording that you are trying to play is a HD .ts from ITV1 HD. I THINK that is mpeg4 and not mpeg2. I think the UK freesat SD channels are mpeg2 and the HD are mpeg4 avc. I think mpeg4 avc is the same as h.264 (not to be confused with mpeg4 part 2 which is used by xvid etc). Both ...

Re: Pi as media player for CRT TV: which distro?

All of the above should work pretty well. You may need to make an edit to config.txt to set to PAL or NTSC depending on the formats your tv supports. You will also want to use the video calibration applet as CRT tv's can overscan quite a bit by default. Personally in on openelec but I also like xbian.

Re: Getting TOSLINK audio: status?

I would be VERY interested in this too. As I understand it some people have got USB soundcards to work using alsa (or was it pulse?), but alsa is not supported under omxplayer which means it it unsupported under xbmc. This means you cant have GPU video decode at the same time as USB sound. The hdmi ...

What encoding are the source files? Are you sure Pi xbmc doesn't play them natively?

I fiddled with mediatomb on an Ubuntu box, but now I just stream over nfs since there is hardware mpeg2.

Does this mean that AC3 audio 5.1 or 7.1 will work in the xbmc (tomaz version) when installed inside raspian after rpi-update is applied? This particular bugfix was on the GPU firmware (start.elf), so an rpi-udpate should get you the fix. Confirmed fixed here too. Thanks SO much for this Dom. Worki...
