Modern version of "Construx" or "Erector Set" ?

Hey all, Is there a modern version of "Construx" or "Erector Set" that anyone would recommend? It would be so cool if instead of being limited to buying a pre-made chassis for my bots, I could just snap together any design I wanted, then take it apart and try something new every couple weeks when I ...

Benefits of PI Camera?

Hey all, Can someone please explain to me the main benefits of using the PI's special camera, and/or the pitfalls of using a standard USB camera? I don't need a camera for good image quality or anything. I just need something that will relay a low-fi image back to me for the purposes of piloting a r...

Re: Swap shrank to 100MB?? (solved)

Yeah I've been reading about how awful swap is going to end up being if I ever need it. Yuck. Maybe I'll find a cheap SSD soon to sit my PI on top of.

Re: Connect to a public network

Oh wait ... I just had a silly idea. If all you need to do is open a browser and accept terms + conditions .... then maybe you can simply open a chrome debug window and make note of what POST values get sent to their website once you accept, and what URL those values are sent to. Then just write a l...

Re: Swap shrank to 100MB??

Uhm ... nevermind. I finally figured out that I should have been editing /etc/dphys-swapfile instead, as the existing file is a swap partition and not a normal swap file. I decided to just make my own swap file and add it to fstab, so I don't end up forgetting about that config file again later on. ...

Swap shrank to 100MB?? (solved)

Hey guys, Raspbian seemed to have setup a 1G swap file, and I wanted to double it to 2G. I did the usual commands (as far as I understand), basically: sudo swapoff /var/swap sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/var/swap bs=1M count=2048 sudo mkswap /var/swap sudo swapon /var/swap or something to that effect. Af...

Re: Connect to a public network

I'm sorry if this seems unhelpful, but you would connect the same way you connect using any other computer. As in ... figure out how to get your laptop or a different linux machine to connect at boot first. That way you're not making the problem harder by also using the PI at the same time. I haven'...

Cheap robots source: Wired controlled toys?

Hey all, Broke as living hell over here, but looking forward to lots of fun playing with my new PI. I'm a coder and I'd love to run tons of experiments trying to plug homebrewed neural networks into a little autonomous bot. Having zero experience controlling hardware up to this point, and having a l...

Re: Outsiders trying to login

Throwing in my 2 cents: Try installing "Config Server Firewall" (csf). It's a pretty nifty free app that has thus far helped me secure all my servers. Long story short, it'll autoban IPs for failures such as what you're describing and a bit more. Doesn't take toooo long to get used to. Just make sur...

Re: Syncing a pi folder to a cloud

If it were me solving this problem, I'd rent a low end box that featured less ram/cpu/speed and more storage space.... then just sync the folder using rsync over SSH. I'm already using rsync to make sure one of my local servers mirrors the files on one of my backup servers in cyberspace that way. It...

Re: Add 2nd User -> Crashing Menu Bar Loop

Holy crap, I love you guys. I thought this board was going to suffer from sparse replies. The suggestion of adding my new user to all the same groups as 'pi' is a confirmed fix, for my installation. So so happy. Woot. Thank you for all your input. Just throwing in my 2 cents as well, that I would pu...

Add 2nd User -> Crashing Menu Bar Loop

Hey all, I just got my first PI (yay!) and I'm trying to sort through everything but having problems adding a 2nd user to the system. I issued the command "sudo useradd mike", to create my new login. Then I simply did "mkdir /home/mike && chown mike:mike /home/mike". I was then able to login to cons...
