Re: Introducing PIXEL desktop: new Raspbian release

So I finally gave this a try on one of my slower SD cards. Its pretty fast performance. I could switch to this. It does break my install scripts that I used for an alternate account for kodi. Let me ask this. Is there a way just to install the gui and nothing else? Like is there an apt-get just for ...

Re: Introducing PIXEL desktop: new Raspbian release

How is the performance on this? I have been constantly tweaking the Pi to get more speed out of it without having to overclock. My main concern with this is how Kodi runs and possibly retropie. In the past I have used jessie lite and manually install LXDE but I hear its phased out. I am hoping Pixel...

Re: Best RPi3 OS for internet/text editing

Install raspbian lite and install LXDE for your gui environment. This rooms pretty well to me. If you want even more speed install Arch Linux with LXDE for your gui environment.

Looking for a simple vpn solution

Hi all I am looking for a VPN client that is easy to setup on the pi. I don't want to host the vpn service myself with other hardware because it's too much work. I have 3 pi's to install this client on. The cost needs to be free or under $3.00 a month.

Re: Need assistance with mounting drives at startup

Here is an update so far. I have tried adding a _netdev and the x-systemd.automount to the fstab file separately and together. _netdev appears to do nothing and the x-systemd.automount prevents them from mounting at all. I have even tried it with the auto and noauto options. I think the problem mayb...

Need assistance with mounting drives at startup

Hi all, I am trying to mount SMB shares from another raspberry pi to a raspberry pi. Both pi are running raspbian jessie lite. My issue is that I have been organizing my media library and in order to keep the folders separate I had to create 8 SMB shares. When I had just a few shares it would load t...

I specifically mentioned other applications outside of nano to show that the keyboard does work its just the combination of the keyboard with nano that is the issue.

Trouble with editing with nano

I am having issues with editing with nano. I am not sure if there is a setting I am missing on the keyboard I have or something else. The keyboard I have is the iogear gkm681r https://www.iogear.com/product/GKM681R/ . Its a wireless usb keyboard. The keyboard works great for everything else except n...

App that can work as a keyboard for the pi

Hi all I tried searching for this but the word keyboard is used way too much to be used as a key word in the search. Anyways, what I am trying to find is an android app that will let me control the pi 2/3 via bluetooth or wifi with a full keyboard and mouse without having to install any extra softwa...

Need help with VNC screens

Anyone here have any experience with using VNC on RPi? What I am trying to do is get it to mimic the screen sharing feature that macs have. I can get it to sign into the desktop and use apps and such but I can't get it to show the same screen that is actually connected to the pi. Its doing this like...

Re: Create user account via script

I think I figured it out. I will know in a few minutes once this script finishes. I believe I was using adduser instead of useradd, the former makes you set the password and info about the account the latter just adds the account.

Create user account via script

Hi all, I wanted to know if its possible to create a user in raspbian jessie without a password prompt upon creation of said user or create a user and set the password in a script. If this is possible what's the syntax for it. I am not trying to make this super secure or anything so it does not have...

Just letting you all know I ran into the same issue with arch linux on the pi. However the changing of the sshd and ssh files do not fix the issue. I can use the ipv6 address to get into the pi 3.

Re: Set the time and date correctly

I get that but how? If you can provide sample code that would be a big help. Sorry to be asking this but when I used raspbian it was never this hard to get things to work. Why does Arch have to be so much more complicated to do simple stuff? Do I need to edit a file to specify a time?

Re: Install a basic gui help

The arch wiki sucks because of the way its written to be more complicated than it needs to be. My suggestion is to install lxde as your gui. To Install LXDE pacman -S xorg pacman -S xterm xorg-xclock xorg-twm xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils pacman -S lxdm pacman -s lxde Enable LXDM serivces systemctl e...

Set the time and date correctly

I have tried using the wiki but its just more confusing especially if I dont know the names of the folders I am supposed to be searching in to edit the configs for setting the time. The initial stuff I saw only works if the device has a real clock but the Pi 3 does not. So far the only thing I could...

Re: Micro usb to micro usb power switch

That means you HDTV USB is dropping below 4.65V or so to the pi. I bet it is your USB cable. Go get a good micro USB cable, and try it again is my suggestion (a micro USB cable from a 5V 2A power supply). That HDTV USB port should be putting out 5V. I have tried multiple cables in the past, same re...

Re: Micro usb to micro usb power switch

When I had my pi3 running Kodi and on my HDTV, an option was to use a USB to micro USB cable, and plug the pi3 directly into HDTV USB port for power. HDTV off/pi off. Just make sure your HDTV supports USB media (don't plug it into a service port). http://s28.postimg.org/4abj94pot/WIN_20160411_11_08...

Re: Micro usb to micro usb power switch

For the link that Rattus posted is there a power port that goes to that which would make it compatible with the pi 3's increased power needs? I read that it now needs a 2.5 instead of a 2.1 power supply. I might just have to go that route if there are no other options.

Re: Micro usb to micro usb power switch

The reason for this is that the primary user of this Pi will be my wife. She is currently pregnant so having to bend down to press the switch would be hard to do. That is why I wanted the switch as a connector to add to an existing power adapter. This pi 3 is a media center. We tried the unplugging ...
