Re: Measuring Distance with Ultra-Sonic sensor - Need Help

Thank you for the input/feedback. I have no specific application in mind. I was looking at a Lego EV3 Mindstorms set and it has an ultrasonic sensor. I was not too successful doing that with lego. I thought it would be neat if, having some vehicles platooning (one after the other), the pitch of the ...

Measuring Distance with Ultra-Sonic sensor - Need Help

The project I have in mind would do the following: 1. measure a distance with an ultrasonic sensor 2. Display such distance on the screen (fancy graphics would be nice) 3. Play a tone (continuously) whose pitch/frequency changes with the distance. I think I can do 1 and 2 easily. The difficulty is h...

Not sure what the issue is. I have an RPI3 running OSMC via WIFI and no issues ... what am I missing?

Re: dB/SPL meter using USB microphone

40 dB is fairly quiet. As a reference, I work with construction machinery and typically the noise there is around 70 dB(A). 70 dB is 1000 times louder than 40 dB. I think it's two issues: the sensitivity of the microphone, or the so-called 'noise floor' i.e., what is the lowest amplitude of acoustic...

Re: Who is using a 7 inch screen?

I have the 7" screen and for me the goal is to build a stand-alone project with some GUI interface on the 7". I do all of my development on a 27" Samsung screen. Lots of desk-space to do the work. Ultimately, if you're thinking of the 7" giving you a portable solution, you'd also need some sort of b...

Re: dB/SPL meter using USB microphone

If you're after sound, then the reference 20 micro-Pascals, i.e. 20×10^(-5) Pa. This reference is for the RMS pressure. Since however in your formula you're using a ratio of powers, then the reference is 400×10^(-10). I think a more challenging task will be the implementation of the A-weighting, to ...

I eventually got it to work. I can post what i did if someone wants unfortunately its so laggy that its unusable realistically. Thank you for the feedback. So, it is fair to say they that this is NOT a viable replacement of the Logitech Skype HDMI camera, correct? https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-96...

Re: Skype working on Raspbian + RPI 2

Very interesting topic/project. Sadly, I have a logitech skype camera ($200) and Microsoft no longer supports such product ... Now I need an alternative and thought of going the RPI route. Two questions come to mind: 1. Is this working for both audio/video reliably? 2. Can I use any webcam or it nee...

Re: Network Security with the RPI

Thank you for the links. Seems I have some learning ahead. My concern stemmed from a basic thought: As the RPI platform is fairly open source AND affordable, it seems the prime candidate for hacking and malicious activities. I'm not too concerned about what would happen to the RPI itself, but the RP...

Re: RPI 3 won't start

Yes, I did unzip the files. Now, I just tried the noobs version and it works. But, all other options (raspbian lite and full) do not work.

How about 32 vs 64 bit versions? I do not see that option anymore on the download page.
Was the 64 bit pulled out because of issues?

RPI 3 won't start

I'm having a hard time getting the RPI 3 to start. I tried 3 different operating systems (downloaded images) but with no success. Few days ago I recall seeing software versions for both the RPI 2 (32 bit) and RPI 3 (64 bit). Today, no mention is given on the download page. What I've done: 1. downloa...

Network Security with the RPI

This may have come up in the past, but in any event, it's still a relevant 'concern'. With many of us having one or more RPIs connected, one begs the question how secure is the RPI's OS? A related question: How can one improve security? My RPIs are connected to my wifi, and I have other computers co...

Re: I feel like betrayed

I'm not sure why we complain about the PI2 vs PI3. In these modern times every company does it, and it's a way to keep the economy going and 'interest in the product' alive. If I want to be upset about this, then I'd be upset about Apple, for holding off on some features and releasing them every ye...

PI Zero - Available today at Micro-Center

Just thought I'd share the news with anyone interested. Micro-Center has the Pi-Zero available today. I just got back from the Westmont (CHicago) store and they had 100+ units. Make sure you get yours before the ebay 'entrepreneurs'. One catch though: You can only get one, not more.

Good Luck

Gathering data from Car CAN/OBD2

I have a project where I'd like to collect car/engine data (via CAN or OBD2) together with some GPS and IMU data. I was thinking of the following configuration: 1. Raspberry PI 3 2. Bosch IMU BNO055 3. GPS unit, such as from ADAfruit 4. CAN/OBD2 <- do not know yet, to collect engine rpm, vehicle spe...

Re: catapult project ( raspberry pi ) - physics - need help

Heater, I certainly can appreciate the complications/challenges. However, my attempt is not to trivialize the problem, it's more like starting with something easy and build upon it. I'm thinking of the 'old' story regarding William Tell. It is said that, before he perfected shooting an apple on top ...

Re: catapult project ( raspberry pi ) - physics - need help

Here is a thought, and sorry if this may have been addressed before. If you are after only the TOTAL acceleration (not caring what the vector components are), all you need is then the vector sum (square root of the sum of squares) of all readings from the triax accelerometer. This does not answer in...
