Re: How to set the clock/time?

Does this all mean that I have will have to reset the time on my Pi when I get it, every time I turn it on, since it will not be on the internet? That is not good news.

Re: RS & Allied Update #5 (9th Nov)

@ianeck: RS staff have said a few times they are only shipping the Vers 2 512MB now, so you should be okay. There is only Model B right now, no Model A available yet. But your order number is not a standard one for ones placed on the RS website so it will not show in the order table. They say you ha...

Re: How to check the IP of my Raspberry Pi?

It just occurred to me, on the old image you set ip address in /etc/rc.conf Example there. Job done But /etc/ is not available until after the initial boot. I cannot perform the initial boot without being ssh'd in via ethernet to complete the process, can I? Performing initial boot headless. Only h...

Re: RS & Allied Update #5 (9th Nov)

I wonder how many of the emails unanswered by RS are due to their mailbox being full and the senders not getting those failed deliveries back? Lame excuse, mailboxes need to be cleared regularly, but there are lots of reasons mail does not get through so anybody who does not hear back from RS within...

Re: How to check the IP of my Raspberry Pi?

@pepedog: yeah, I know the image is old, but at that time, did not know it would be 8-9 months before my Pi materialized. It should work for the basic command line utilities I need it for. And to unpack and dd the most recent image to another SD card hooked up via USB. I know it will be slower than ...

Thanks Pepedog, an answer and more questions. I have no idea what an nfs boot is, I know command line file management stuff real well, but know nothing about booting systems other than pushing a reboot button. I will be sticking a freshly dd'd SD card into the Pi and turning it on the first time. FY...

Re: How to check the IP of my Raspberry Pi?

@pepedog: but what is the Ethernet IP of the Pi at the initial boot, before any packages can be installed? I thought we were supposed to be able to do the initial boot over Ethernet using a standard Ethernet cable without a switch or router.

Re: Duh, ssh admission; password/locale/keyboard

You might also look at dumpkeys, showkeys, setkeycodes, and loadkeys. You may need to use sudo before the commands to run them, but they are supposed to be a way you can redefine how a Linux system interprets a particular keypress. I have not figured out how to use them, but was studying them.

Re: How to check the IP of my Raspberry Pi?

@antacti: This is the Arch subforum and I am going to be running Arch on my Pi and ssh'ing in from a Linux PDA. The default ssh login password for the Pi is root, as is the username. Does any part of your answer apply to sshing in to Arch from a Linux box? I would hope someone out there knows what d...

Re: latest firmware CRASHES RP1

I guess I do not trust software updates because of my limited experience, and having read so many people having similar problems when they did firmware updates on ArchLinux Arm. I was hoping it would be more stable than my PDA, but that seems to be far from the case. But at least it will have more m...

Re: New to Linux and have no idea what i'm doing...

I know how to write symlinks but am confused by the question, maybe partly because I do not have my Pi yet. For one thing though, most GUI applications let you say what you want to use as a default folder for downloads. If you are using a GUI to transfer the files, check it's various menus. If you w...

When I was doing a lot of heavy stuff on my PDA, I was doing tar backups twice a day as I never knew when the system would crash. Are you programming stuff all over the place, so an ls -t wouldn't give you a list of files to tar up more like at least once or twice a week? My plan is to put anything ...

Re: How to check the IP of my Raspberry Pi?

I will have the same issue when my Pi arrives. I see I do have the netstat command on my system. So if the ethernet connection is active, "netstat -rn" will give the Pi's IP as a destination? I thought I would have to know the IP in order enter into some config files before I could connect the devic...

I am not sure what w.c. means (google gave too many different definitions), but if RS is supplying Allied and will have Pi's 17 Dec then Allied would have them after that. I think I was being dense in not really understanding the dates may be when they say they will be all caught up, to me on first ...

Thanks plugwash. Interesting, if RS is saying the following, it is very inconsistent with what Mike and Vic have said about all RS and Allied back orders will be filled before Christmas. Guide says: As of 21-NOV-2012 the Pi is listed as "Temporarily out of stock - back order for despatch 21/12/2012"

You could do 'your thing' then post the results here in one fell swoop - then someone could put it on the WIki as a new page if your bandwidth isn't up to the job. The Buying Guide at eLinux seems to me to be more historical, and not a very user friendly place for people to go to find out the current options for buying a Raspberry Pi. I want a page I can refer people to, that is easy to parse, that will give an overview of where and how to buy a Pi. The best p...

Elinux RPi Buying Guide

The elinux RPi Buying Guide is badly out of date. Any takers to work on updating it? Right now, it does not fit reality much at all.
