Paul, thank you. It turns out I will not need a serial connection to pi zero, Was able to successfully ssh in using a new ethernet adapter and improved power supplies for both my old Model B's ethernet adapter and the hub on pi zero. Not sure which factor was more important, would take more testing.

Paul, how fortuitious! I am running your modified raspbian-lite image (for flashing C.H.I.P) on a pi zero! I cannot for the life of me get ssh working, will serial login work without any extra equipment? I still prefer ssh, but serial is better than nothing. Tried PM'ing you but board will not let me.

You can see what the system calls are by starting from a terminal with strace. -o says where to put the output, -s gives length of output strings

strace -s 60 -o OUTPUTFILENAME YOURCOMMAND &

& at end of line gives you command line access during execution.

If you are suggesting that a package is a dependency that is not listed for another packages, that needs to be reported upstream at the source. Your image does not display for me, if you are logged in via terminal to remote machine, then I would guess it is the remote where messages are coming from. But otherwise, it would be the client. Not for ArchLinuxArm, we use pacman, not apt-get. But maybe knowing what packages worked for another OS will help someone using Alarm.
