Re: Alternative to Open Media Vault?

I tried OMV and had problems with it, which I traced down to OMV itself, so I asked for help on their forum. They were absolutely sure it was a Samba problem, which I assured them it wasn't, they responded that it was and to ask for help on the Samba mailing. My response to this was, sorry, but I am...

Re: ip camera recordings to samba server

Do the users 'cam', 'cam1', 'cam2' and 'cam3' exist on the Samba server as Unix & Samba users ?

You are getting the error message because you seem to be trying to start a Samba AD DC, try running 'systemctl start smbd' & 'systemctl start nmbd' instead.

Re: mount networkdrive does not work

This is getting a bit silly now :) Firstly, you need to install 'cifs-utils', not 'smbfs' Using 'guest' on the mount line is not sufficient, your share needs to allow guest access and by default it doesn't. You can log into a Windows Computer as 'Guest' (You cannot on a Domain joined computer becaus...

Okay you posted this as your line in fstab: //192.168.0.0/home/pi/mynetworkdrive cifs guest_netdev 0 0 That is so wrong, I do not really know where to start ;) But, lets try. the first part should be the sharename and where it is: //IPADDRESS/sharename There should then be a space and then where you...

Re: What am i doing wrong with my IP config

Your new machine appears to be using an APIPA address, it is something that sets the IP when it cannot contact a DHCP server. This means you have two options, run a DHCP server on your network or go back to your machine supplier and ask them how you set a static ipaddress.

This post descibes several issues with samba. Version 4.10.2 is reported to fix these. https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/453944/samba-network-discovery-fails-through-file-managers-but-works-with-smbtree There is also a problem with the default smb.conf with the [homes] section. Re: rpi4 Cannot see network shares in File Manager

Windows has 'network discovery' as a replacement for 'network browsing', Samba doesn't have this. To get 'network browsing', you need SMBv1 and this is now turned off by default because it is very insecure. You should be able to navigate to the share by using '\\the_rpi_hostname\the_share_name' in '...

Re: rpi4 Cannot see network shares in File Manager

So your problem isn't that you cannot see the shares, it is that you cannot open anything in a share. This is probably a permissions problem, you can see files in a share, but are not allowed to open them. Whose bright idea was it to have the [homes] share and the [pihome] share ? The 'path' for [ho...

Re: RPi File Sharing for both Windows and macOS

OK, this is why you do not share a users home directory, you have this: [homes] comment = Home Directories browseable = no read only = no create mask = 0777 directory mask = 0777 valid users = %S The '[homes]' share is for just the user and it uses the users home directory from 'getent passwd user' ...

Re: RPi File Sharing for both Windows and macOS

You shouldn't really be sharing a users home directory at all, but as long as you have two shares a sub directory should work, so I repeat, please post your smb.conf (without the commented lines)

Re: RPi File Sharing for both Windows and macOS

To restart Samba, try:

systemctl restart smbd
systemctl restart nmbd

There have been a lot of changes between the version of Samba you were running and the one you have now, so can you please post your smb.conf, but please remove any lines that have a '#' or ';' as the first character.

@dunbrokin: I don't see any shares (except the default printer related ones) in that smb.conf. I've no idea if ubuntu uses a different configuration to create those as I don't have access to a PC running it. Assuming it doesn't, you'll need to add suitable shares to that file and create the neccess...

The smb.conf I posted was the one you posted, just without all the commented lines (lines that start with '#', or ';'), Samba ignores these, I also removed any default lines. What is this 'path=smb://pj-selgbuild.local:445/' ? You do have Samba installed, you are just mistaking the package name for the service names :) [email protected]:~# service --status-all ......... [ + ] nmbd ......... [ + ] smbd ......... Yes, that would do it, Samba requires both the opening and closing square brackets.

If you are connecting from Mac, try reading this:
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Config ... h_Mac_OS_X

You should be able to get your Mac to automount your rpi Samba shares.

I think your problem is the setup you have chosen, your BT router will probably be a homehub, This is a combined router and modem, in its present setup it should now just be setup as modem with everything else turned off (wifi, dhcp etc) One would be to make your netgear router into just an Access p...

Well, no and yes :D
You don't actually need it, if your script works for you, then you are okay without it, but if you want to learn how to use shell script better, then it can point you to any errors.
