Re: Configuring a new user for samba

You could do worse than to read the official Samba documentation on setting up a standalone server (this is what you are doing).

Re: Configuring a new user for samba

I am not exactly sure what each line does precisely, but I can now log in and copy files to the Raspberry Pi HDD .... :D If you read 'man smb.conf' you find this: browseable = yes This means you can browse to it from windows writeable = yes This means that your users can modify or create files on y...

Re: Rpi3 + Usb + Samba - problem with copying large files

OK, first, next time remove all the commented lines before posting your smb.conf :) Is the win10 computer part of the workgroup 'WORKGROUP' ? Does the user 'obieq' exist on the win10 computer and as a Unix and Samba user on the Samba machine, all with the same password ? Does the group 'obieq' exist...

Re: Rpi3 + Usb + Samba - problem with copying large files

I see that using '.local' for the dns domain isn't a good idea hasn't filtered on to this mailing list yet ;)

Using '.local' interferes with Avahi (and vica-versa)

Can you post your smb.conf

Re: Rpi3 + Usb + Samba - problem with copying large files

Are you connecting to the share by its short hostname or by its FQDN ?
If you are doing something like '\\fileserver\share', try '\\fileserver.domain.tld' instead.

Re: Registering hostname with DNS server

I will probably get told there is another way to do this, but a quick 'sudo apt-get purge dhcpcd5' will remove dhcpcd that is getting in your way. You should then be able to add whatever hostname you want for your pi to /etc/hostname and the isc-dhcp-client that is being masked at the moment should ...

So, you are prepared to do all the mechanical work involved in creating a robot, but expect to have the software set up automatically, grow up, you need to understand how Linux works before you start writing your 'C' code.

Then why did you buy a Raspberry pi ?? The whole idea behind it is to teach computing and there is more to it than just clicking a mouse.

The best idea I can give you, sell yours and buy another windows machine.

Re: troubles with samba, cups and booting errors

As I said, typical windows user, knows how to use windows, but has no real idea how windows actually works. It isn't laborious work, setting up Samba as a standalone server is quite easy, install samba with apt-get, create a conf file (smb.conf), start samba and then add users and optionally groups....

Re: troubles with samba, cups and booting errors

The Samba information on the link you posted is wrong, so very wrong. You need to set up your rpi as a standalone server (basically the same as a windows machine that is not joined to a domain). The link I posted ,tells you how to do this, but you claim it is too hard to follow, heaven help you if e...

This is Linux, there are usually several ways of arriving at the same result :D

As for Samba, the link I posted is the official Samba way of setting up a standalone server.

Re: Simple Samba Share Access Denied

If you look at the permissions for /media/pi there is this: drwxr-x---+ 4 root root 4096 Jan 9 14:18 pi this break down into, the 'root' user can read, write and enter the directory, members of the 'root' group can read and enter the directory, all others are denied everything. That is with Unix per...

Re: Raspbian Jessie: How to start hostap, dhcpcd, isc-dhcpd-

If you look very carefully, you will find that you have isc-dhcp-client and dhcpcd running, you don't need both. I just 'apt-get purge dhcpcd5' then set up the fixed ip's on the clients. This gets you back to how wheezy used to do things.

Your reply says it all, 'Honestly, one actually would urgently need a setup.exe'. You are a windows user and are used to just clicking a button and getting software installed and setup for you. Sorry, but Linux doesn't work like that (generally), you will need to configure your printer yourself. If ...

Re: troubles with samba, cups and booting errors

Samba does work correctly, provided it is set up correctly! Neither of the tutorials you link to are of much use, they both get things wrong, have you considered using the Samba documentation ? For a start, you are trying to set up a standalone server, so see here: https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/S...

Re: troubles with samba, cups and booting errors

You could try 'apt-get purge -s cups'
This will pretend to remove cups completely, if you are happy with what it wants to remove , just run it again without the '-s'

Yes, you need to remove the quotes from the path, you could also investigate vfs_fruit. This was written especially to get better interoperability between Samba and OSX.

No, they don't have to belong to the same group if you use setfacl to set permissions.
With standard Unix permissions you are limited to user:group:others, but you can allow multiple users if you use setfacl

Re: Folder permissions and Samba

You could try creating a new group and then add 'pi' & 'silkstone' to it, You could then set the default settings for the share with setfacl. I suggest you read 'man setfacl' and the internet.

I could tell you how to do it, but you will learn more by working it out yourself ;-)

Re: Folder permissions and Samba

You shouldn't add 'root' as a Samba user.
Sorry, I should have said you would probably have to reset the permissions, but any files or directories should get created with the owner:group of the logged in user.

Re: Folder permissions and Samba

OK, I take it that only 'silkstone' will connect from a windows machine, so first, remove this line from your smb.conf: server role = member server You don't have a 'member server', you have a 'standalone' server. Next, add these lines: security = user vfs objects = acl_xattr map acl inherit = Yes s...
