Re: RS delivery to the USA (DHL)

Not only did I not have any problems with surprise charges, but the transit time from the UK was *less* than that for the Farnell package from the East Coast of the US...in spite of the Farnell package using a much more direct route (through Oakland) that RS via DHL (San Francisco to Sacramento and ...

Re: Preprogrammed SD cards and cases for order?

[...] PayPal is unwilling to take my US credit card to pay a UK company. That's odd - they're quite happy to take my UK one to pay companies in China! I dunno. May have something to do with how the vendor set up their account. Or it may have something to do with my not having a PayPal account. In e...

Re: Preprogrammed SD cards and cases for order?

Those are the same style (same manufacturer, at that) that RS/Allied have, save that the Farnell/Newark-Element14 round one appears to have a transparent or at least translucent top. I still think both of them are rather large and ugly...plus I'm not partial to red (I'm ":cool eyed"...prefer blues, ...

Yes. Anything where you have to do using sudo is done as if you were root (and can be done without sudo if you ARE logged in as root). Such things affect the whole system--that is, all user accounts.

hi While my Pi sits here looking ever so pretty i find it to be the most frustrating thing i have ever owned. It stares at me whispering of hidden potential. However, not so savvy me thought that a hdmi to vga converter would be an easy thing to come by. In this i was wrong. So as I don't have a TV...

Re: Keyboard keys

*Before* doing the keyboard config, you'll need to do: Do you mean that this is a prerequisite, or that the order matters, or that getting the correct locale is more important than the correct keyboard layout? As far as I can see, none of those are true. So far as I know, if you don't set the local...

Re: Adventures in Pi Land...Shopping for keyboards

The Logitech K120 is a nice keyboard. I'm using it right now. Instead of Fry's, I use a simpler algorithm: walk down to Staples and try out the utterly minimal selection of wired keyboards. :-) Well....it's a more or less okay keyboard. I wouldn't call it nice. It does work, though. I've sent a que...

Adventures in Pi Land...Shopping for keyboards

After some rather frustrating efforts with a USB-2xPS/2 adapter to connect a keyboard and mouse up to a Pi through a KVM switch, I hunted around the house and came up with one single solitary USB keyboard. It's an HP wireless one (model KG-0851) with a truly dreadful "touch". After finding that it w...

Re: Keyboard keys

*Before* doing the keyboard config, you'll need to do:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

Change the locale to en_US.UTF-8 (remove the en_UK.UTF-8 by hitting space, then hit space again when you have en_US.UTF-8 highlighted).

Re: DVI KVM Switch for sharing monitor between RPi and PC

Two criteria you probably want to watch out for... Besides DVI, you need the KVM switch to use USB for the keyboard and mouse. Many inexpensive KVM switches are passive, or optionally passive devices. That is, they get ehir one power from the systems connected to them. The Pi really wouldn't have po...

oh, a master. hi ya =) err i donno about that too, im new to both linux and python, but when its shutting down, the pi do broadcast some sort of shut down notice, donno how to intercept this as well. i think intercept the kill signal maybe too late to do anything. I am not an expert on unix/Linux (...

Re: A plea to the Foundation re. MPEG-2

Please correct me if I'm wrong but the licence is acually needed only because of patents issues. If so, then it only applies to the countries where software can be patented. So, for example it should not be a legal problem to sell RPi in EU (and many other countries) with MPEG2 decoding, without pa...

Re: future availability

With regard to multiple order, that seem to be a premature announcement - I still don't think many will be able to buy in multiples. As to the speed of ramp up - this is a complicated thing. It's not just manufacturing time (which takes time to organise)- you also need to factor in the time to get ...

Re: Is the Raspberry Pi good for someone with no experience?

Another advantage to using the Pi to learn about Linux...if you trash the system, all you have to do is reload the SD card and you're back in business. Of course, this is easiest if you take the precaution of holding a backup image somewhere so it's a simple copy process rather than having to instal...

Since one of things done during shutdown is to kill all processes, can Python intercept the kill signal?

Re: ...Model A...?

It is. We don't have a definite date at the moment because that has to do with how quickly the distributors can get on top of the current backlog (which is massive) along with some other stuff; we're tentatively saying we'll start making them in September, but that's VERY subject to change and does...

On the other hand... Allied (the US subsidiary of RS) now allows you to order more than one (I ordered 2), with a estimated delivery in 12 weeks. I refuse to believe that a secure system couldn't be set up, and I certainly wouldn't mind if they made it linked exactly to a single Pi, and said tough luck if that Pi died. Depends on how secure you want and how much money you're willing to put into creating a secure system. Once a "secure" syste...

Re: Static IP issues

IF you're using the most common subnet mask in your router--255.255.255.0--then the 192.168.2.2 isn't in the same subnet as the rest of your machines. You really do need to use 192.168.1.x, for some x that doesn't conflict with any other device on your LAN. The easiest way to do that is to use an IP...
