Re: "Beginners" put off...

I've never had any trouble with W32diskimager (on Vista). It does a grand job for me - whats the problem?

Re: "Beginners" put off...

I'm guessing they have problems imaging the SD card. Apologies if I going off-topic again but... It appears that the Foundation and an overwhelming critical mass of the community is supporting Raspian and Python, which is great, as in addition to choice there needs to be standardisation. Is this cho...

Re: "Beginners" put off...

True - but for a young child who has never programmed that extra concept could be a barrier. Most modern basics support block structures, so kids can start off with spaghetti and then learn the advantage of blocks. My point is that we are looking in the rear-view mirror and forgetting how we got her...

Re: "Beginners" put off...

I agree - BASIC looks alien to me now, but thats how I started and by learning that you are learning more good habits than bad. Personally I don't like languages without curly braces (like python) because I find them hard to read. I still think BASIC with line numbers (*GASP!*) is easier to learn fr...

Re: "Beginners" put off...

I remember that too. I guess that the Foundation is doing things the other way round, and looking for corporate backing after establishing the Pi in the wild. Re: Linux - alot of people don't use Linux. I'm looking forward to seeing a port of ReactOS and how Android shapes up. Most peoples home comp...

Re: "Beginners" put off...

Python is todays popular language, but it will not always be that way. What kids really need to learn is the principles of programming and the flexability to apply them to any language. As with spoken languages, that starts with getting cosy with a single language and then branching out. When my 8 y...

Re: "Beginners" put off...

If Linux brings you out in a rash try RISC OS. Linux has a continually ballooning software base, wheras RISC OS' software base is more slow growing (and less free). You may also find RISC OS documentation similarly thin, but it boots in the blink of an eye and has BASIC. If all you want to do is pro...

Re: "Beginners" put off...

I can see both sides - you've got to give things a chance and request/accept help, but equally if this is to be understood by eight year olds and administered by busy teachers, that needs to be made as painless as possible.

Re: "Beginners" put off...

Also the Pi is a victim of its own flexability with the most popular OS (Linux) being modular consisting of 1000s and 1000s of files with 1000s of settings which provides much greater scope for disaster alongside its flexability - I found that a culture shock. Single OS machines like the Amiga requi...

Re: Attacknid

Rio and I have subjected the attecknid to extensive testing and can further report that it is of satisfactory build quality and seems to function mostly as intended. The quirks to watch out for are that the turret has to be aligned over or centrally between legs in order to walk straight or else it ...

Re: Attacknid

No - I'm not sure - it looks like it is IR as there are glassy bumps and no antenna, but it works if I operate the handset from inside a cardboard box. I'm wondering if I can get a spare handset to adapt and connect the switches to the pi via an optocoupler....? The turret lifts as well as rotates a...

I agree that I2C is not a beginners subject but I think the BCM2835 hardware couldn't make it easier as it automatically does things that usually have to be programmed in.

I agree, after reversing my position on this on another thread a year ago. The new quick start guide should save a few (hu)man-hours of dispair - thanks S(a/i)nta! The only addition I would make is a photo of the usb power plug as there are a plethora of diddy-usb-esque connectors - anyone else buy ...

...or maybe you chose values which RISCOS can't support - try my values or the graphic options that RISCOS allows you to use once you have booted to the desktop....?

X1366 Y768 do not sound like standard resolution modes - maybe that is why Riscos defaults back to the original setting.

hmmm..... works for me - does it still do that after you change the resolution via the icon on the right and save the pinboard settings? Maybe yours is a lapdock specific problem...?
