Sorry but connecting the pi to my wifi router via rg45 cable didn't make it show up on network devices in my windows 7 pc when i connected it to the wifi. What do I do?

I read that you can connect the raspberry pi to a laptop with putty, and use your laptops screen, keyboard, mouse with the pi. I tried the procedure with model b+, but it said connection refused. Unfortunately, I don't have any of the electronic media listed in the post. Is there a way I can directly check with my raspberry pi without wasting money buying extra cables.

Have already tried with Raspbian Wheezy direct. Didn't work. Sorry I am not much of a hardware hacker currently, so am not really able to understand the table. However I believe my cable looks exactly like the cable on raspberrypispy. What should i do?
