I understand from the Ubuntu forum that an external HDD can be formated and can run Ubuntu. Perhaps I am wrong. You can make a live bootable HDD that will run on your X86 (or X86_64) laptop (as long as it can boot from a USB drive), you CAN NOT do that on a Raspberry Pi. There's no version of Ubunt...

If you use an enclosure with external power-supply and internal SATA-to-USB or PATA-to-USB bridge it should work. ghans The external HDD will be self-powered with power cord. Attaching an Ubuntu USB HDD

Can I connect an HDD to the USB port of a Raspberry B+? The HDD will be running Ubuntu. Will I be able to transfer files back and forth. Are there any serious limitations?
