Re: Best first language choice

Back in the days you didn't have much of a choice. You powered on your Speccy or C-64 and found yourself in a Basic environment. Today it's a bit more difficult, because some language are domain specific (or at least they tend to get used more in certain environments, e.g. PHP for web development). ...

Re: Cloud Cluster

The Pi is all about getting people to learn something. Sure, you won't get into the Top 500 with a Pi cluster, but you can teach and learn about such systems without having to buy a 19" rack full of blades. Take a given problem, solve it with code using a certain distributed environment and see how ...

Re: Raspberry PI ARM Clone

@Lob0426

"Sold out" really tells you nothing about how many devices there are and how many get produced and sold per month.
There's a famous acoustic guitar builder in L.A. who uses to be too busy to take any more orders and it's not like he's building and selling hundreds a day...

Re: Cancelling my order

<t>I think there're some reasonable arguments here. Of course the Pi has lots of power compared what a lot of us were used to a couple of years ago. I remember co-writing a book when I was a student on a 333 MHz Celeron (overclocked to 375 MHz) with Word on Windows. The publisher demanded me to sue ...

Got that mail, too. But where's the news in that? We've been told that by Farnell some 8 days ago. Did it really take them 8 days to send out the mails??

<t>Reminds me of the good old days when we were sitting infront of our 8 MHz machines without FPU patiently waiting to get some fractals finished. Re: Using openGL?

WebGL is nice but you can't do too much on the Pi with it except of some basic stuff and demos. The X window system, window manager and browser eat up too much RAM for more ambitious WebGL applications.

Thanks for the recommendation. I had that one already on my Amazon wishlist but it never hurts hearing from someone who actually uses it.

I had 164552xx, but the wrong SKU (2081347, "Chipset, Raspberry Pi, Model B").

That order is still in the system as I found out lately, although they told me they'd delete it.

Is libsdl1.2debian-alsa a separate package or part of libsdl1.2-dev? The latter is what you want to have installed if you need sdl.
