Well, Blimey. Youtube now works fluidly at 1080p. I'm gobsmacked. Not wishing to hijack your post pik33, but there are so many settings to get right and know of. Ah! Just spotted this advice.... run the Screen Configuration tool from the Preferences menu, right click on HDMI-1, Resolution, select the mode you want, and click the tick to apply it.

Dear Raspberry Pi Engineers. It would be lovely if my new Pi4 could play Youtube really really smoothly better than my old Pi3 used to be able to do (sort of)

Ah. That's the config file read by Chromium to set it's start up flags - /etc/chromium-browser/customizations/00-rpi-vars. The chromium browser start script /usr/bin/chromium-browser reads that and then applies changes - specifically at present it disables the gpu. So you need to keep an eye on bot...

Ah Thank you for the explanation 6by9. I'd thought it was a simple split between "GPU ram" and "CPU ram" What I'm after is as smooth playback as I can achieve in Youtube @ 1080p (actually 1280 x 800) as this Pi4 is pretty much going to be used as a media center. Thanks Mike. If that's the case, is there an upper bound? If so, what sets it? and what should the settings be in the Raspberry Pi Configuration for GPU memory and the entry (if any) in config.txt?
